Spotlight Announcement: These 10 Innovations Are Transforming The Way Young People Are Taught Financial Skills

Together with OP Financial Group, we have identified 10 education innovations teaching youth financial skills from Finland and other parts of the world. The goal of this Spotlight was to identify how young people learn financial skills now and how they could be best taught in the future. These practical, scalable and pedagogically sound innovations are here to increase young people's learning of financial skills.

Over six months of search has led us to this moment. We are thrilled to announce the 10 education innovations helping increase young people's learning of financial skills and therefore, helping them live a life where they can flourish! Through the HundrED Spotlight on Youth Financial Skills, we have been looking for practical, scalable and pedagogically sound innovations that provide creative ways to learn financial skills as a young person. In partnership with the OP Financial Group, we are ready to introduce you to ten global innovations that are transforming the way children feel prepared for life and their understanding of financial literacy.

Spotlight Report

Along with the ten innovations, we are also releasing a Spotlight on Youth Financial Skills report exploring the status of young people’s financial skills, the need to introduce it into every grade’s curriculum and a detailed overview of the selected innovations transforming the way financial skills are taught to young people. The report is available in Finnish and English, with the help and support of OP Financial Group.

The 10 innovations helping increase young people's learning of financial skills

Me & MyCity from Finland:

All school children should have access to basic skills in the economy and working life. Me & MyCity -learning module helps pupils to be more prepared for further studies and working life. It gives young people the first touch of working-life and supports their growth into functioning members of society.

#TarkkaFyrkka Comic Workshop from Finland:

#TarkkaFyrkka comic workshop is a lesson where students get to know basic information about credit information, payment defaults, and personal financial management. Cartoon drawing is used to help participants process these topics and serve an easy way of mirroring themes to their own life. In the workshop, students get the basic information mainly through participation and functional methods.

Pikkuyrittäjät from Finland:

The aim of Pikkuyrittäjät (Little Entrepreneurs) is to increase and strengthen the pupil's participation and ability to take initiative with learning by doing; to encourage children to think about their own ideas and to try them in practice. The goal is to provide children with life-changing experiences and a feeling of success to show that anything can be achieved if you keep trying.

Taloustaitohanke from Finland:

The idea behind Taloustaitohanke is to teach financial skills to young people. Instructors are trained, volunteering professionals from banks. Training takes place in groups but also as individual coaching.

Investment Course for High School Students (Lukiolaisten sijoittajakoulu) from Finland:

This program uses the stock market to inspire students to think about their life from a long-term economic perspective. The desire to invest will create an incentive for students to plan their personal finances, start saving and follow the economy more closely. In addition, they will acquire crucial skills that will help them throughout their adult lives and strengthen their self-esteem.

Aflatoun International from  Amsterdam, Netherlands:

Aflatoun International creates high-quality curricula on social and financial education for different age groups. Our mission is to socially and economically empower children and young people so they can act as agents of change in their own lives for a more equitable world.

The Educate! Model from Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya:

Educate! prepares youth in Africa with the skills to succeed in today’s economy. We tackle youth unemployment by partnering with schools and governments to reform what schools teach and how they teach it so that students in Africa have the skills to attain further education, overcome gender inequities, start businesses, get jobs, and drive development in their communities.

Girls Leadership and entrepreneurship network (GLEN) from Lagos, Nigeria:

Girls' Leadership and Entrepreneurship Network works through school clubs that gives girls in schools opportunities to contribute actively to global issues, develop their leadership skills, build confidence and inspire girl-led enterprises. Our areas of focus is on Human Centred Design, Entrepreneurship, Leadership Development, Education and Economic Empowerment using design thinking methods.

What if you only had $1.25 a day? from Zitoradja, Serbia:

This project connected Math with other subjects through research about real-world problems and Sustainable Development Goals. Students applied math knowledge (statistics and financial skills), but also raised awareness and empathy about poverty and hunger in the world. They shared their results with peers from other countries using Skype in the Classroom and other educational platforms.

Inspire X by Small Economy Works from Canada:

Our culturally specific course curriculum & educator support platform takes a holistic ecosystem-wide lens, putting students at the center. Students learn vital technical skills through the experiential process of starting an entrepreneurial venture that solves real social, economic and environmental problems. This leads to increased essential skills, community stakeholder collaboration, and innovation

Some of the educators and changemakers behind these best practices attended the 2019 HundrED Innovation Summit and also were celebrated by OP Financial Group on 26th November at the HundrED HQs.

Congratulations to the selected innovations and cheers to all who participated in the HundrED Spotlight on Youth Financial Skills!
