Bangladesh Virtual Classroom (BVC)

Join an active learning class and enjoy learning sitting in your village home

People in villages of Bangladesh have poor access to active learning educational facilities. BVC allows anyone with access to TV & a basic mobile handset to participate in a nationally aired 'live' class. Remote students join studio students by texting their answers to interactive and progressive poll questions. The presenter randomly interacts with students through a 'live' call giving feedback.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

People in villages of Bangladesh have poor access to active learning facilities. The solution provides remote access to those with access to TV and a basic button mobile set. Remote students can join students in a studio and work together to answer progressive active learning questions and get feedback on their learning immediately. This methodology causes much excitement among the students.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The BVC team worked with the Bangladesh Open University to create and deliver 28 lessons of an existing Higher Secondary Certificate English curriculum. Students enrolled in the course with access to a TV and a basic button mobile handset were able to participate. A survey showed that remote students as well as those participating in the studio enjoyed participating, answering active learning questions and comparing their own responses with others. The feedback on polls helped settle their minds regarding their active learning answers.

How has it been spreading?

The BVC method was extended and used during and after the pandemic to host university level programming classes. Students unable to come physically joined students in the physical face-to-face class and participated together as a group. In addition to poll answers, students are now able to engage and participate by writing short answers, ranking sequences, have video and audio calls and get live feedback from the subject teacher. Surveys have showed improved motivation, learning and retention. The BVC system is now able to use web based easily available services to implement the interactive processes.

Looking forward to implement the system with other subjects and help those interested to install and use the interactive system with trained teachers.

1. Find teachers who are habitually interactive.
2. Train teachers in the use of interactive teaching methods and tools.
3. Test with materials already tried and being used.
4. Use web-based technology to implement the BVC classroom both face-to-face and remotely for a subject.

Implementation steps

1. Find teachers who are habitually interactive
Habitually interactive teachers are those who launch each class with a query type of question to engage and motivate the students towards the subject. One of these teachers should be selected as the lead teacher to implement BVC.
2. Train teachers on web interactive tools
BVC is now implemented using easily available web based interactive tools. The teachers need to practice how to integrate their usual interactivity using online web based tools both in the face-to-face class as well as online through online meeting tools.
3. Practice using existing course materials
There are tried and tested course materials for basic university mathematics, fundamental computing, basic Python, English foundation, basic soft skills. These materials may be used for practice and practical implementation to gauge the improvement in the students. 4. Implement with additional subjects as desired
Teachers would need to be trained on how to create materials for interactive lessons. Interactive classes on STEM subjects can easily be designed and implemented.
