Gullies as 21st-Century Creative Labs

Gully Gully Code is a youth-led initiative that builds 21st-century skills & bridges digital gap in public schools. We challenge the notion of who has access to quality digital education and redefine traditional lab spaces by utilizing gullies aka slums, as innovative spaces. Our principles are inclusive learning of digital skills and fostering fun collaboration through learning in one's gully

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

GGC addresses the need to bridge the digital education gap in public schools as the global economy demands 21st-century skills. It leverages tech and transforms students’ screen time into productive learning, utilizing gullies as innovative spaces and mobiles to overcome resource constraints. By fostering youth-led communities, it ensures future leaders emerge from marginalized backgrounds too.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

GGC addresses digital gap for underprivileged students by offering their first exposure to tech. Leveraging Code Mitra app tailored for India's mobile landscape, students engage in gamified learning via low-cost Android phones. GGC collaborates with community centres, organizing 3 sessions per course, each lasting 1-1.5 hours. These sessions cover CS fundamentals and input-output mechanisms through interactive experiential content. The final session introduces block-based programming.

After sessions, students identify community issues, devise a problem statement and illustrate it through animated conversations coded using creative programming. Community leaders are selected based on the innovation of their projects. Beyond learning coding and CS, students develop skills like PS & creativity.
Access to tech within neighbourhoods enhances students' confidence and cultivates leadership abilities. Collaboration fosters sustainable solutions, while local language learning boosts engagement

How has it been spreading?

Gully Gully Code's collaborative leadership model fosters growth and community engagement. Currently, we have 30 student leaders and have reached 60 communities. By ensuring to onboard student leaders after each community intervention we ensure a diverse and empowered team representative of the community we reach.

We have partnered with NGOs like CYDA, Umang, Bal Vikas Kendra, Satyarthi, and Pratham leveraging existing community networks to expand our reach. We were also invited to Avasara Academy to conduct sessions, following which we onboarded 20 female student leaders for our initiative.

Our student-led approach ensures active participation and through partnerships and student mobilization efforts, we want to drive change and digital inclusion in every neighbourhood we reach.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Gully Gully Code is an easily replicable youth/ community-led initiate. Students, teachers, parents and community members can reach out to the dynamic GGC team on our Website. Our team then collaborates with community leaders to plan and conduct sessions at community centers.
