Revitalization of PLCs, increased willingness to learn from another, to share with external education communities are promising developments. Center supports teachers to work for the benefit of both its own ecosystem and the other education communities. The structure allows us to record all professional learning activities which contribute to strategic planning and data-driven decision making.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Mandatory professional development has been replaced by continuous professional learning programs designed for specific needs, enriched with a competency-oriented approach and effective feedback. This center was established in order to respond to this transformation in a more effective, transparent and sustainable way for both in and out of school and national/international education communities

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The center evaluates professional development demands in line with the mission, vision and needs of the school. It also offers professional learning programs. It carries out in-school and institutional projects aimed to improve learning outcomes and contribute to learning environments by collaborating with experts in their fields and relevant departments. Comparative analysis of the current year and the previous year shows an increase in the variety of professional learning programs, the number of participants and the total professional development hours at school. Each professional learning program is subject to an evaluation. Sustainable data-based decisions are made for next steps. In addition, all data is meticulously stored in the digital environment and reported in detail.

How has it been spreading?

Following the in-school awareness, the number of national/international collaborations, projects, studies, participants and professional learning program hours increased. The Center has established standards of professional learning programs in collaboration with ECIS (The Educational Collaborative for International Schools) to benefit the national/international education communities. We have successfully completed the "Learning Together" training series, as in last year, in collaboration with the Young Guru Academy (YGA), an NGO in Turkey, with volunteer teachers. We collaborated with CPET (Columbia University, Teachers College) throughout the establishment, and our collaboration continues. We are working to increase national and international education projects.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Hold a search conference to identify your school’s professional learning needs.
Create a committee to address these identified needs.
Seek consultation from an institution that can guide you during the growth process and establishment of the center.
You can contact the Professional Learning Center via pomer@hisarschool.k12.tr

Implementation steps

Search Conference
Hold a search conference (or two) with participants from different parts of the school and identify what is needed in professional learning (and for the school culture)
Professional Education and Development Committee
Implement the needs identified by a committee of voluntary representatives. The fundamentals of the system set up by this committee. For each step, the feedback is received from the school community. Needs of teachers are closely followed.
Transition from Committee to Center
Work together at the point of growth with a good example that can be a model in this regard, determining the mission, vision, strategic plan. It is important to have volunteers from different departments of the school during this transition.
Center
Become a permanent structure of the school by moving from the committee to the center. It is important to be a center that operates with the aim of providing more enduring and effective solutions to the changing needs of the staff in education communities. It needs to conduct fair, sustainable, inclusive and beneficial work for both national/international and in school and external education communities.
