About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

I created this innovation to address the critical educational gaps faced by disadvantaged youth in Liberia. By providing tailored educational opportunities and mentorship, the initiative aims to empower young people, breaking the cycle of poverty and enabling them to achieve their full potential and contribute to their communities.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

In practice, the Initiative to Empower Youth (IEY) operates through a network of community-based learning hubs strategically located in underserved areas. These hubs are vibrant centers of learning and growth, equipped with essential educational resources and staffed by dedicated educators, mentors, and volunteers.

The day-to-day activities include a mix of tailored educational programs that focus on literacy, vocational training, and digital skills. Students engage in interactive workshops, hands-on projects, and real-world problem-solving activities that connect learning to life.

Mentorship is a core component, with each participant paired with a mentor who provides personalized guidance, helping them set and achieve educational and career goals. Regular career guidance sessions, soft skills workshops, and exposure to different career paths ensure that youth are prepared for future opportunities.

How has it been spreading?

The Initiative to Empower Youth (IEY) has been expanding its reach through strategic partnerships, grassroots community engagement, and leveraging technology to connect with disadvantaged youth across Liberia. By collaborating with local NGOs, educational institutions, and government agencies, IEY has been able to establish learning hubs in multiple communities, providing accessible educational opportunities to those most in need.

The use of social media and digital platforms has also played a crucial role in spreading awareness and encouraging community participation. Through targeted campaigns, IEY has effectively mobilized volunteers, mentors, and donors, allowing the initiative to scale its impact and reach a broader audience.
