Our goal is to achieve education equity by bridging the gap between tier-1 and underprivileged schools. Through tailored professional development, we empower teachers to foster high expectations, use innovative teaching methods, and inspire students to reach their full potential.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

In rural areas of El Salvador, teachers lack professional development opportunities, resulting in outdated teaching practices and poor student engagement. To address this, we developed a professional development cycle focused on collaboration to help teachers develop skills and better understand, apply, and reflect on their learning.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Nikmati's innovation involves implementing a collaborative professional development cycle for teachers in rural areas of El Salvador. Instead of isolated workshops, Nikmati engages with educators for up to 12 weeks, emphasizing skill development rather than the transfer of knowledge. This addresses the pressing need for professional development in underserved communities fostering teacher empowerment and modernizing teaching methods.
While Nikmati is relatively new, initial feedback and anecdotal evidence from participating teachers indicate positive outcomes. Educators report feeling more confident in implementing new teaching methods and observing enhanced engagement and learning outcomes among their students. Additionally, Nikmati is in the process of establishing more rigorous evaluation mechanisms to quantitatively measure the impact of its interventions on student learning outcomes, which will further demonstrate the effectiveness of its approach.

How has it been spreading?

So far, we partnered with three local NGOs and trained 104 teachers from early childhood to secondary education. In 2020, we began a pilot online program with 17 secondary educators and three international volunteers. In 2021, we completed a second professional development cycle with the same group plus five more. In 2022, we trained 12 early childhood providers on learning through play. In 2023, we consulted and trained another NGO on their educational program. Currently, we're creating a syllabus and learning materials for an afterschool program with 42 facilitators serving 725 primary students in underserved areas. Our goals for the next three years: form partnerships with other NGOs, provide professional development for 300 teachers, and continue supporting those we've already trained.

Implementation steps

Diagnosis
This is an initial meeting during which our team gets to know the institution's and teachers' needs and interests. Examples of planning documents and student work are presented so that the Nikmati team can better understand their goals and needs. It is followed up by a session with the participants in which each one of them can express their area of interest and goal for professional growth.
Design
Based on the information obtained in the diagnostic meeting the Nikmati Team designs a tailor-made professional development cycle for the institution and selects the best match for a qualified professional teacher volunteer who can provide the training.
Preparation
Coordinating with the qualified professional teacher volunteer to organize the material of the workshop and make sure that it addresses the contexts and needs of the institution and teachers and the consolidation of Collaborative Communities of Practice (CCP) among the participants.
Cycle of professional development
8-12 weeks of professional development with two sessions with the qualified professional teacher volunteer, planning, peer feedback, implementation, and reflection.
Exhibition
This is the culminating step of the cycle in which each member of a CCP contributes documentation (photos, anecdotes, reflections, teaching materials, examples of student work) of their learning throughout this professional development journey. The objective of the exhibition is to make the learning visible and share it with the rest of the community.
