Transforming Students into conscious Leaders: A Peer Teaching/Learning Pedagogy

Involve was founded with the objective of creating an ecosystem of students supporting each other. We create this support system through an innovative pedagogical approach of peer-based learning that would enable them to develop skills (academic and non-academic), find their purpose in education, take ownership and eventually develop agency to make informed decisions for themselves.

Empowering students to take ownership and be co-creators of their education is a powerful way to enhance the teaching-learning process. This approach taps into students' natural creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking skills, and helps them develop a sense of agency and self-efficacy. A space which is more dynamic, inclusive, and supports the diverse needs and aspirations of all students.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Students today are passive recipients of education with no ownership of their learning. This creates unmotivated learners with inadequate academic skills & future-readiness. It transforms into a lack of agency, an inability to make decisions or exercise their choices. Hence, it is essential to create age-appropriate experiences for students to take ownership of learning & transform into leaders.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Peer learning has been shown to positively impact learning outcomes, classroom behaviour, collaboration and responsibility among students. This in turn will allow teachers to take on more mentor and facilitator roles where their time and skill are used to guide knowledge acquisition rather than just managing classrooms.

Our programs are focussed on developing two skill sets in the students
Academic skills: Our programs aim to ensure students of all grades achieve mastery in foundational numeracy and literacy through the use of activity-based learning, innovative Teaching-Learning materials and levelled student-friendly curriculum

Future-ready skills: The Peer Teaching program gives them a practical experience of leadership which is key for them to see the visible shift in themselves. We enhance that with Leadership sessions & reflective practice so that the students internalise the process.

How has it been spreading?

Over the past four years, we have worked with 20,000+ students across four geographies, with a focus to bridge academic learning gaps and build future readiness in them.

We wish to take this pedagogy and program to each child in India, through two approaches. On one hand integrating within the government schooling system, by working with teachers, school leaders, educational officers & educational departments in the government. Over the next three years, we plan to work with 3 districts and 1 state through this model, impacting a million students.

The second approach to scale is via non-profit partners who cater to students in rural areas and areas serving vulnerable populations. Through this model we will work with 5 partners over the next 3 years, reaching 50,000 students.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Impact & scalability

HundrED Academy Reviews

With 10,000 students supported with this program, there is evidence that it can be moved to a broader audience and could cross borders.

Promoting student ownership of their own learning experience through this innovation develops future-ready skills and academic excellence as they develop the necessary skills to thrive.

PROCESS STAGES OF THE PROGRAM

PROCESS STAGE 1-3

INITIATION

  • Orientation

Orientation is all about creating awareness in the stakeholders (people who are both direct and indirect partners of the program, eg: students, and systemic stakeholders) about the program, ensuring their buy-in and conveying the expectations & outcomes.

  • Selection

Selection is a process to finalize the number of Student Leaders and Learners who will be part of the program.

This is to ensure fairness in the process, student leaders come with some conceptual understanding of the content and are interested in the program and learners come with an interest to learn

This is done in two parts: Selection test (Baseline in the respective subject) & Group Discussion (GD)

  • Training

This is the most important stage of the program. As student leaders themselves are students, they need knowledge, skills and practice to gain confidence to teach their learners. This training is an effective process through which they are equipped with three things:

- Their understanding of being a mentor to someone, and the responsibilities around it, How to deliver the content and how to manage the classroom

PROCESS STAGE 4&5

IMPLEMENTATION

  • Mapping

Before we start the peer teaching classes, mapping is a process by which we group a particular Student Leader with a set of learners to carry out Peer Teaching. This stage is important because learners and Student Leaders are purposefully brought together considering the baseline score and GD rating so that the process is challenging according to the individual level.

  • Peer Teaching

The selected Student Leaders and Learners interact with each other on a daily basis, learn from each other, assess each other’s growth, and build their own path to leadership through the course of this process stage.

  • Monitoring

Based on the subject the Studen Leaders will be teaching, the project coordinator(PC)/teachers will have to make sure the classes are going according to the set timetable and content plan by the student leaders. This will give more information on how student leaders are teaching and how learners are learning to course correct the process

  • Leadership/Reflection sessions

This is the favourite part of the process for both students and us. The role of a Student Leader is to develop as a leader through teaching and learning. The journey of a Student Leader consists of a strong reflection on their actions, articulation of challenges/success and developing an entrepreneurial mindset in solving problems.

You can design certain questions/activities for student leaders to understand the concept on a broader level and apply it to peer teaching spaces. This builds confidence and equips the Student Leaders with tools to address problems within their classroom and a safe space to reflect and learn from each other.

  • Assessments

Based on the subject the Student Leaders teach the learners, chapter-end assessments are conducted and recorded to see the academic progress of the learners. This is an important data aspect to collect and analyse. This also feeds into the decision-making process of need-based training, leadership sessions and Feedback plan for the program.

  • End-line Evaluation

This is conducted at the end of the completion of the program, i.e., after the Student Leaders have completed teaching all the chapters to the learners and attended all the leadership/reflection sessions to evaluate the overall growth of the students

  • GRADUATION

This is a proud event for everyone where we celebrate all the students for their efforts throughout this journey and how each student leader's role helped improve learners and themselves as well.

Our entire program is given in simple steps, for more information/support on the process, please do contact us!
