Schools Greening initiative for better learning project.

Children

In Uganda there is access to free education, but little is done in environmental education, yet it is important to impact skills and knowledge of climate change to learners at early stages of education. The project will create green play spaces in the school premises which is children's opportunities to play and learn beyond the classroom. It will create a conducive learning environment .

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

The project aims at improving and creating conducive environment for children within the schools in Luwero District, Central part of Uganda. This will be achieved through formation of vibrant and inclusive environmental clubs and creating spaces as well as forums for children engagement to facilitate better learning environment in 05 government aided primary schools among vulnerable communities.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Outcome 1: Increased life skills and environmental literacy through co-curricular school clubs

consists of two outputs aiming at forming strong, vibrant and inclusive school environmental clubs in 05 schools and through them build the capacity of children in environmentally friendly practices. The project will, in consultation with teachers and school management, mobilise, organise, coach and mentor children in environment clubs as an entry point to reach both direct and in-direct beneficiaries. The environmental clubs are child-led and its governance will be based on democratic principles and practices to increase knowledge and respect for human rights such as freedom of association.
Outcome 2: Increased practical engagement of children in the promotion, protection and sustainable management of the environment for peaceful co-existence within their communities

consists of two outputs which aims at transforming theoretical knowledge acquired in the environmental club to practice.

How has it been spreading?

05 primary schools already mobilized, 200 learners already joined environmental clubs of their school, both boys and girls already enrolled and 1500 learners indirectly benefited through peer to peer learning,
school management committee, teachers and parents are already trained as care taters in the project.
over 1000 community people received climate change education through our clean ups, community outreaches, tree planting projects, plastic recycling and community radio talk shows.
all the above strategies created connections, mobilizations and more awareness and visibility of the project.
And the communities support their learners education, schools enrollment have improved, children remain in school to complete their primary education while they grow up environmental responsive.
