Fostering a culture of sustainability inside our campus and homes

We are a group dedicated to promoting a sustainable life inside our campus and homes. We aspire to produce graduates with skills that not only allow them to succeed but also enrich and sustain the world. We are looking at our common future examining six major global challenges which are food security, human resources, species and ecosystems, energy, industry and urbanization.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

We started the Science And Sustainability Club to educate our students about food security and importance of adopting agriculture and sustainability in their daily lives. We needed our students to make most of the on season in Qatar and come up with various other alternatives for the off season to practice agriculture.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

We use Garden Based Learning to educate our students about basic agriculture. We have a school garden where we cultivate various crops, thus educating our students about the importance of food security, eating healthy, being self-sustainable and importance of adopting agriculture in our daily lives.
We also have aeroponic towers to grow salad greens during off-season using water that is recycled from a tank beneath the tower.
We teach our students about various food preservation techniques, water filtration hacks, microgreen agriculture, upcycling crafts and lacto fermentation techniques to equip them with various alternatives for food storage and security.
Various online activities are conducted to create awareness about the carbon footprint that we are leaving behind and prizes are given to encourage the reduction of carbon footprint. Through these activities they are introduced to various methods in which carbon footprint can be reduced.

How has it been spreading?

We have been featured in the school social media, PUE Newsletter, local newspapers and local news channels multiple times. We have assisted our sister schools in installing the garden towers and have collaborated in various other ways to implement such programs. Looking forward, we would love to bring in a swap shop in the school to swap unused uniforms, dress up items, toys and other reusable materials to bring awareness about excessive consumerism and the need to adopt a minimalistic life. We would love to introduce "Meatless Mondays" and "Sustainable dress days" to educate our students about the impact of livestock industry and textile industry on the health of the planet in the coming years.
