We envision a shift where children, especially in underserved communities, experience education as an enjoyable process that equips them with both literacy and social-emotional skills. By using a story-driven approach and fostering a deep love for reading, our hope is to build a foundation for students that will prepare them for a lifelong connection to learning.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Storytelling Everyday addresses the gap between classroom instruction and accepted foundational literacy standards. Traditional rote methods fail to transfer essential reading and writing skills, leaving many students behind. By using stories as tools for both literacy and SEL development, we ensure that students are more prepared, both academically and emotionally, for their learning journey.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Storytelling Everyday uses storytelling pedagogy, where stories act as the core instructional tool. We use a proprietary curriculum that integrates stories, activities, and SEL objectives into a seamless learning experience. The key to our approach is that the follow-up activities—be it writing exercises, discussions, or reflective tasks—are tied to the story. For example, after listening to My Aaji has a Tail, students reflect on “whose tail they are” and make a Thank You card for their loved one. This hones vital SEL skills like practising gratitude & expressing emotions, while practising writing.
We use digital facilitator manuals to provide step-by-step instructions for each session. These manuals, accessible on smartphones, make it easy for facilitators to prepare, with minimal intervention. By employing technology to standardise the delivery, we ensure consistency and scalability across different regions & resource constrained environments.

How has it been spreading?

Since its launch, Storytelling Everyday has expanded across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The program’s success has been recognized through partnerships with local schools and organisations. In 2022-23, we began with 1000 children across 7 schools. In the current year we are engaging with 9264 children spread across 91 schools. In addition to schools, we have set up mini-libraries and initiated arts-based sessions to support literacy through creative expression. Over the next 2-3 years, we aim to scale to more than 50,000 children to deepen our impact on foundational literacy across India. As the program scales, we continue to focus on building a sustainable model that can be replicated in diverse rural and semi-urban contexts.

To adopt Storytelling Everyday, schools or organisations can request a partnership with IndiVillage Foundation. We provide digital manuals, student workbooks, and orientation training for educators. Contact our program team to get started with implementation in your area. The process is simple, with minimal resources required, making it accessible for schools with limited infrastructure.
