We live in a rapidly changing world, where students need the skills of collaboration, teamwork, critical thinking and problem solving. There is a call for education to be more innovative and creative around the world. However there is little professional development for teachers to help them teach both with and for creativity in the classroom.The RISE framework of Creative Education is based on well-established research and theory in the creativity field, newly applied to education.
The RISE Framework is applicable to teachers at all levels of school education. Educational creativity can aid both teachers and students in consolidation of the skills necessary to acquire and apply knowledge in a diversity of settings. All subjects, including traditional core subjects such as English, Science and Mathematics require creative thinking, problem solving and innovation. A series of online Creative Education Modules have been developed to assist teachers with the knowledge and skills to apply in the classroom.
From the outset, Geelong Grammar School has always prioritized sharing Creative Education with the wider education community. We have formed research partnerships with a range of universities, including the University of Melbourne Graduate School of Education and the Universities of Connecticut and South Australia. We publish our research in a range of fields.
Where is this innovation/project happening?
The RISE Framework is being implemented at each of the four campuses of Geelong Grammar School, from years P-12. Currently, ten subjects incorporate the RISE Framework into their teaching practice.
Why is this innovation/project meaningful?
The RISE Framework will transform the way Geelong Grammar School approaches education. Historically, education models have largely focused uponstandardizedd testing of knowledge rather than explicitly developing essential skills such as collaboration and problem-solving. Creative Education is used to overcome this discord, bringing together the skills needed for flexibility and personal growth.
Creative Education promotes specific skills that assist students to strengthen their relationships, to collaborate and build teams, enhance flexible thinking, promote open-mindedness and critical thinking, and enable the exploration of meaning and passion in life.
We believe that over the next ten years and beyond, as the science continues to develop and Creative Education schools share best practice around teaching and learning, the emphasis of educating young people with skills will show the benefits of this legitimate and necessary commitment to developing the creative capacities of our students
How is this project/innovation being put into practice?
The seed for Creative Education at GGS was sown in 2015. Over the past three years the staff at GGS, in collaboration with international experts in the field of creativity have been responsible for implementing a program which addresses staff professional learning, classroom practices, implicit and explicit curriculum, and assessment while meeting the requirements of national curricula.
