Transformative Training for Literacy Proficiency

Skilling children, youths and adults for better educational and life outcomes

The innovation empowers disadvantaged, vulnerable and marginalized children (11-14), youths and adults to access technologically enhanced quality education for improved educational (e.g. academic performance) and life (e.g. success, wellbeing & social life) outcomes. Using discovery based learning and guided instructions, beneficiaries acquire essential knowledge and skills.

The following are the expected changes in education through our innovation: (a) Improved performance (e.g. Academic, tasks, activities, goals, commitments, agreements) of learners (b) Improved connectedness and relationships (e.g. Support systems, learning community, parents/ guardians) in education system (c) Safe and Conducive Learning Communities

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

The main challenges are poor and unsustainable educational and life outcomes of learners due to unfriendly and unsafe learning environments in schools (e.g. bullying, abuse, mockery, violence) which affect negatively learning and to some extent lead to school drop outs. The risk of school dropouts is increasing due to lack of connectivity to appropriate support systems.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The innovative model improves learners’ four core abilities which are ability to Connect (to their educational and support systems), ability to Relate (with their educational and support systems), ability to Learn (for educational and life outcomes) and ability to Act (be performance/ goal oriented).

Children in targeted schools showed marked improvement in academic performance, participation in class, love for reading and learning, improved classroom attendance, social interaction and behavior. The boy child transformed to being respectful, supportive and kind to the girl child due to the social emotional strengths which we enhanced in the learners. The girl child’s confidence and courage improved their participation in classroom and their academic performance.

It has a handbook and uses technology to enhance learning and upscale.

How has it been spreading?

The program has reached about 1500 children (Literacy skills and environmental awareness) who improved in academic performance, literacy proficiency and acquired responsible behavior. Some learners who benefitted from our programming were able to open reading/ literacy clubs in other schools thereby contributing to improvement of literacy proficiency and academic performance of other learners.

The organization has trained 250 teachers and various partner organizations so that it may reach about 10 000 children in the next two years.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

If any institution or individual would like to try out or adopt the solution to their context they should do the following:

1. Contact us so that our Education Program Coordinator can hear your plan and context: https://reach-all.org/contact-us/

2. Training - 2 days online capacity building training to understand the model

Impact & scalability

HundrED Academy Reviews

The most significant reason for my impact score for is its proven ability to address low literacy and numeracy levels by fostering connectedness and self-esteem among learners, as evidenced by program.

Training teachers in the strategies necessary to support students in achieving objectives, considering their regional growth needs, allows the initiative to be scaled in almost any geographic and cultural context.

Two weeks ago an organization in Lesotho (Southern Africa) requested us to present our innovation to Lesotho Teachers Association (LTA) and Lesotho Council of Non-Governmental Organizations (LCN). We made a 30 minutes presentation and they were amazed and are planning to invite us to conduct a stakeholders meeting and see how they can roll out this innovation country wide.
The friendly library concept has increased communities’ engagement and usage of library services. This concept is lacking in the country and hence our pilot project in the city of Livingstone. The design of libraries and spaces provided have, to some extent, hindered access and lowered communities’ desire to use these libraries. Therefore, there is need to promote friendly libraries in Zambia.
On World Read Aloud Day (WRAD 2024) we used social and emotional community connection and engagement skills to sensitize about the importance of writing and also we used the BIG BOOK made from local materials (wastes) to collect stories from various communities.
On World Read Aloud Day (WRAD 2024) after sensitizing communities about the importance of writing, children lifted up the BIG Pencil as a pledge of understanding importance of writing and commitment.
On World Read Aloud Day (WRAD 2024), we sensitized communities about the importance of writing using our BIG Pencil as shown in the photo. Writing is one of the skills we promote in this innovative among others.
The aim for the friendly library culture is to promote access and to stimulate individual learning, research and advancing society as a whole while contributing to national development. This can be achieved through educating, informing or entertaining a variety of audiences by promoting self-help, self-improvement and providing various learning and development opportunities.
Through this innovation we promoted reading and learning through PLAY/ FUN (Socially) to make it easier and attractive to learners/ children. The children’s corner in the Public Library was equipped with children’s educational games/ puzzles/ toys; many children started visiting the children’s corner of the library. Some visit to read, to play educational games, to research
“Transformative Training for Literacy Proficiency” presentation was done at the World Literacy Summit at the Oxford University, Oxford, United Kingdom (UK) at 08:20am (UK time) on Tuesday, 4th April 2023. https://reach-all.org/reachall-makes-a-wonderful-presentation-at-world-literacy-summit-at-oxforduniversity-united-kingdom-uk/
Many participants (e.g. some Doctor from a University in Singapore) at the summit approached our Coordinator for further collaboration with our organization. Thanks to World Literacy Summit Secretariat for wonderful work done during the Summit preparations, World Literacy Foundation for this initiative (Summit), Global Fund for Children (GFC) and Litworld (USA) for the support given to ReachAll.
