Hopspots

Interactive learning through movement, sound and play.

Hopspots is an interactive learning tool consisting of 12 brightly colored, wireless floor spots connected to an app. The spots light up and plays sounds, creating an immersive environment for learning through movement. By stepping, jumping, or sitting on the spots, students solve tasks, play educational games, and create their own activities, making it ideal for fostering creativity.

More playfulness, digital creativity and collaboration. Movement will also foster better wellbeing and motivation and the outcome should be that they learn better.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Children are often passive and demotivated for learning in schools. Hopspots was made to motivate, support physical movement when learning and foster digital creativity for the children, rather than being passive consumers. With a background from research about interaction design, I wanted to create a technology for the future generation on the premises of the children.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The normal setup is:
- 12 interactive, wireless tiles, that can light up
- A speakersystem that plays sounds
- An App that controls the games
The children can for example play a memory game, where they have to match 2 sounds: When stepping on the blue Hopspots-tile it plays a sound (e.g. 'Germany) and you have to find the matching sound on a different colored hopspots-tile (e.g. 'Berlin' when learning about capitals and countries).
Children can record their own sounds in the app and challenge each other.
There are also other games, such as a music game or an interactive story where the pupils have to collaborate and decide on ethical dilemmas together in order to survive on 'The Island'.
There are also 2 other ways of using Hopspots:
1. Code:kit - use a micro:bit to control 3 Hopspots-tiles and programme your own games.
2. Key:connector - transform the interactive tiles into wireless keys. You can now play games on a computer controlled by the feet or make your own game in Scratch

How has it been spreading?

Through local distributors and through international trade fairs. Approximately 300 institutions are now using Hopspots.

Implementation steps

Set up and connect
Place the 12 Hopspots-tiles on the floor in a spacious area. Open the Hopspots App and log in with your school log in. Calibrate the Hopspots-colors with the App (step on the color that the iPad says).
Select or Create a Game
Choose from pre-made educational games or create your own custom activities using the app. You can adapt games to fit specific learning goals or subjects.
Engage students with active learning
Let students explore the game, encouraging teamwork and movement. Guide them as needed to ensure everyone is participating and understanding the task.
Evaluate and adapt
After the session, reflect on the activity. Use insights to tweak future games or explore new ways to integrate Hopspots into different subjects or learning styles, e.g. plan how the students can make their own game in the next lessons.
