Environmental and conservation literacy in school

Education to sow a special mindset in the youths for conservation and environment.

As never before, our world is creating a new relationship human-nature, human-animals. With endangered and extinguishing species around the world, none seems to keep environment and conservation literacy to few. I believe that every conservation theory and work are grounded on education. I am committed to educating youths in Kakuma refugee Camp to minimize the killing of various animals.

I would like students to be prepared and empowered to be familiar with the environment and conservation literacy. I hope to see an new culture, a new mindset being inculcated in the youths so that their relation to the nature, environment and species might not always remain that traditional conflict human-animals, or human- environment. I would like youths to shape their careers too.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Founded in 2019, the innovation is dedicated to address the issue of the ignorance attached to the environment, leading to high rate of scorpion stings, and snakebites within the refugee camp and neighborhoods, and even causing deaths amongst community members. The organization focuses on conducting research, educating community members through sensitization sessions, and expositions.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

In practice, Scorpion control center often prioritizes education and prevention efforts to empower homeowners, schools, health professionals, and businesses to take proactive steps in minimizing the risk of scorpion/ snake infestations. This involves providing information about scorpion biology and behavior, offering tips for reducing attractants and entry points, and conducting property inspections to identify potential risk factors.
In support of the education program, we monitor various scorpion species to ensure accuracy of information and long-term success. Scorpion control center offers regular inspections, follow-up with victims of stings and bites, and provides guidance on maintaining a scorpion/ snake-free environment.

Overall, the unique combination of expertise, tailored solutions, education, and ongoing support sets scorpion control center apart in its ability to effectively manage scorpion infestations and minimize their impact on human health and well-being.

How has it been spreading?

The innovation has been spreading with our education programs through which we organize:
- Sensitization sessions in community by talking to parents, community leaders that are sending children to school to develop a pattern of behavior that keep everyone from their family safe from the venomous species. In schools, we aware students about the threat a single sting or bite has in a victim's life so that they protect themselves and take over the task to reminding everyone at home. In school, we also intend to shape youths' career or interest towards environment and conservation. While in market places, we use talk to people and display the catalogs of species.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

If you want to try it, get familiar with your immediate environment: As every part of the world or any country has its own diversity of the venomous species, I would recommend to get to learn about the environment you're in, the species found in there. Get to know them from the harmful to the harmless. Get a catalog with images and relevant information of the venomous species. Act safety.

Media

In various schools, we have been requested to add our environment and conservation program to the existing Environmental clubs. Yes, we tell students that the tree planting activities is related to revive the environment. And they should not discriminate species they would like to see around the forest they plant. Restoring the environment is also providing species with their habitats.

Our education program with its sensitization sessions in schools intends to provide students with the knowledge of our immediate environment and the diversity of the venomous creatures, their reproduction, and areas where they are sprayed. As some incidents of stings and bites occur by provoking these species while they are in their natural habitat, we told them to avoid provoking the species.

Implementation steps

keeping a clean environment

By keeping a clean environment around homes, students and family members limit venomous animals such as scorpion, snakes, spiders, and centipedes from getting into their homes' environment. Cleanliness includes ordering of belongings, checking on everything you would like use, keeping water containers well sealed, moving with light at night, minimizing movements of children and elderly people.

Not picking up on dangerous snakes, and venomous species.

As human-beings, we all share the same environment with these species. It's not prudent to provoke any of these creatures for whatever reason. Some children or community members got to be victims of sting or a snakebites because they provoked a wrong opponent. We should learn and understand that we should let go any of these creatures whenever they're not in our homes. They are helpful for the ecosystem because they're food chain for some species, and they control the population of rodents.

Knowing that we share the same the environment with venomous species

Venomous species such as scorpions, snakes, centipedes and spiders are not supposed to share the same habitat with humans. They belong to the wild. They are not human enemies. As they might occasionally appear to human settlements, you don't have to panic. Stay calm and make an informed decision which protects yourself and protect the species. In case, of a snake, don't shout, you can open the door for it to crawl away. When found in their natural habitat, don't disturb them, please. Watch only

Collaborate with the wildlife department in your area.

With all the challenges related to climate, species are being affected and endangered in various parts of the globe. Yet as many of them are distinguishing, there is an urgency common action to save what we can still see by making a phone call to wildlife office to help in relocating a snake, a scorpion, centipede or any other animals.

Keep talking with family and friends about environment and conservation theory.

Once you have learned some valuable tips for safety, problem and importance of species in the environment, do not keep it for you alone. Share, talk about it with family and friends. Tell your discovery and the reason why we should get to adopt a new way to interact with the nature and species in it. I know this might take time in our African culture to make impact, but it is not impossible. It is matter of carrying on the talk in our groups, clubs, schools, meetings, and change will follow
