Freethinking Foundation

Set children free

In India, about 5 crore elementary school children struggle with foundational literacy and numeracy. To address this, we launched the world's first 'Montessori on Wheels,' bringing Montessori education to the masses. We also introduced a Montessori training program for Anganwadi teachers and mothers. Our reimagined environments empower marginalized communities, making them affordable for all.

We aim to take Montessori to underserved children, in remote areas ensuring they receive a strong foundation for life. Our initiative seeks to equalize academic outcomes, giving them a head start for future success. By instilling confidence, conflict resolution skills, and independence, we envision children growing into resilient, creative global citizens, ready to face the challenges of tomorrow.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

NEP 2020 revealed a need for foundational competencies among primary children. We conducted a needs analysis in Bengaluru slums and found high dropout rates and out-of-school children. To tackle this, we offer Montessori as research indicates that it breaks class barriers, and fosters lifelong learning. The training program will have intergenerational and socio-economic benefits.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The ‘Montessori on Wheels’ initiative, in partnership with Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Government of Karnataka, brings early learning directly to the doorstep of marginalized children aged 2.5-6 years living across Bengaluru slums. On our buses, children have the freedom to explore nature in parks, learn, and go on field trips. The buses are equipped with affordable, hands-on Montessori materials. Lessons are offered in the regional language and English. Children have the autonomy to choose materials and progress at their own pace. Additionally, the thematic content such as culture offers children opportunities to work together and make connections with the world outdoors.
The same model helped transform Anganwadi spaces by introducing child-friendly, low-budget Montessori materials. To ensure effective practice, mothers are trained to become Anganwadi teachers. Thus, empowering the community and enhancing the quality of early education in the city.

How has it been spreading?

Freethinking Foundation launched in March 2022, with the vision of taking Montessori to the Masses. We introduced the world's first ‘Montessori on Wheels’ initiative in May 2022, benefiting 30 children in Hoskerehalli, Bengaluru. By September 2022, we added a second Montessori bus parked near slums in south Bengaluru, serving 25 children.
In November 2022, we refurbished two Anganwadis, catering to 85 children. In March 2023, 21 mothers were Montessori trained by our team, and are now supporting 300 children across five Anganwadis in Bengaluru. By 2025, we aim to partner with the Ministry of Women and Child Development to train 5,000 teachers, reaching 150,000 children across Bengaluru
