New report calls on policymakers to put social & emotional learning in the school curricula

The LEGO Foundation and Finnish education organisation HundrED have released a new report offering policymakers 8 tips on how to incorporate social & emotional learning into the national curriculum and highlighting 13 initiatives that can help. The report release is accompanied by a free virtual event for policymakers.

Today, HundrED released our new Social & Emotional Learning Policymaker Report, created with the support of the LEGO Foundation. The report is accompanied by a virtual event, ImplementED, scheduled for May 12th at 15:00 EEST.

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is defined as the process through which all people acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions, achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy, establish and maintain relationships, and make responsible decisions. Studies show that strong social and emotional skills can lead not only to happier children but also to increased academic achievement, income, employment, and health outcomes.

In today’s uncertain world, equipping students with social and emotional skills has shot to the top of the agenda for policymakers around the world and this report offers concrete examples and practical advice for how policymakers can implement SEL programmes at scale. In the report, 13 impactful innovators from ten countries share their tips for policymakers on how to integrate SEL into formal education.

Three critical points for policymakers raised in the report are:

  • Incorporate professional guidance for teachers on how they can build their own social and emotional competencies. This means funnelling resources into teacher training and professional development.
  • Think long-term and understand that investing in social and emotional learning today pays back many-fold in the future.
  • Act now. The past three years have been tumultuous. Social and emotional skills help children cope with uncertainty.

Anne-Birgitte Albrectsen, Chief Executive Officer at The LEGO Foundation, said:

"The LEGO Foundation is excited to support HundrED in launching the social and emotional learning policy report. The challenge ahead of us is to translate the recognition of the importance of social and emotional learning into concrete action. ”

“Our education systems need to keep up with the world’s rate of change to help children build the necessary skills to navigate all challenges and uncertainties that are inevitable because of the rapid innovations, the climate crisis and rising inequality. Social and emotional learning is fundamental for education and wellbeing. It helps children develop and maintain positive relationships, and become creative, engaged, lifelong learners. The LEGO Foundation is excited to support HundrED in launching the social and emotional learning policy report. The challenge ahead of us is to translate the recognition of the importance of social and emotional learning into concrete action. We hope that this report will inspire policymakers around the world to translate ambitious commitments toward social and emotional learning into concrete and systemic change.”

To coincide with the release of the report, HundrED is organising a free virtual event, ImplementED. The event features selected innovator Daniela Labra Director-General of AtentaMente interviewing Dr. Sofialeticia Morales, Secretary of Education for the state of Nuevo León; Innovator Richa Gupta co-founder of the Labyha Foundation in conversation with Manish Sisodia the Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister of Delhi. It also features interviews with Dr. Komane Mphahlele the Deputy Director General (DDG) of Curriculum Management and Delivery at Limpopo Province Department of Education in South Africa, and Anneli Rautiainen Counsellor of Education at the Finnish National Agency for Education.

The event will take place on Thursday, May 12th, 2022 online and is free to attend. Register for the event at: https://hundred.org/en/events/implemented
