Freadom

place India + 2 more

Building strong readers, confident communicators, and lifelong learners through AI-powered, personal

Freadom addresses foundational literacy gaps by combining AI-driven personalization with evidence-based pedagogy. It assesses each learner’s reading level and delivers tailored content across reading, comprehension, and communication. By building daily reading habits and supporting teachers with actionable insights, Freadom improves learning outcomes and confidence at scale.

We envision a shift from one-size-fits-all, grade-level instruction to a system where every child learns at the right level and builds strong reading habits. Foundational literacy should not be left to chance. It should be measurable, personalized, and continuously supported within classrooms. Through Freadom, we aim to enable classrooms where teachers are not just delivering content, but actively guiding learning using real-time insights on each child’s progress. Students engage with level-appropriate material daily, ensuring that learning gaps are addressed early, while advanced learners continue to be challenged. A key part of this shift is the role of Generative AI. Traditionally, content creation has been limited by publishers and fixed curricula. With GenAI, we are moving towards a model where high-quality, level-appropriate, and contextually relevant content can be created at scale, while still being safe, structured, and aligned to pedagogy. Importantly, this power is not centralized; it is placed in the hands of educators. Teachers can curate, adapt, and design content that best fits their classroom context, learner needs, and cultural relevance. This creates a more dynamic, responsive education system—where content is no longer static, and learning is no longer uniform. Over time, this leads to stronger academic outcomes, improved communication skills, and greater equity, ensuring that every child has the ability to read, understand, and thrive.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

We created Freadom to address a persistent and systemic challenge—millions of children in India go through years of schooling without acquiring foundational reading skills. Classrooms are often grade-driven, while learning levels vary widely, leaving many children behind and others unchallenged. At the same time, teachers lack tools to diagnose gaps and provide differentiated support at scale.

Freadom was built to bridge this gap by making reading instruction personalized, measurable, and engaging. Grounded in the Science of Reading and strengthened through research collaborations, the innovation focuses on building strong reading habits alongside core skills like phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Our goal is not just to improve reading scores, but to enable children to access all learning, build confidence, and unlock long-term academic and life opportunities.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

In practice, Freadom is implemented as a blended literacy solution within schools. It begins with a baseline diagnostic that assesses each learner’s reading level through comprehension, vocabulary, and oral reading fluency. Based on this, students are mapped to personalized learning pathways.

Students engage regularly with the Freadom app—reading level-appropriate stories, listening to audio, and attempting interactive quizzes that build comprehension and language skills. The platform adapts continuously, recommending content aligned to their progress and needs.

Teachers are supported through dashboards that provide real-time insights into student performance, reading levels, and engagement. This enables targeted instruction and small-group support within classrooms.

The program is complemented by structured routines—dedicated reading time, periodic assessments (baseline, midline, endline), and ongoing monitoring. In many implementations, it is further strengthened through libraries, teacher training, and communication-focused sessions to ensure holistic language developmen

How has it been spreading?

Freadom has scaled through a hybrid model that combines school partnerships, government collaborations, and CSR-funded programs. It is currently implemented across 10,000+ schools, reaching over 1 million learners across diverse contexts—including government schools, low-income private schools, and large institutional networks.

Partnerships with government bodies and national boards have enabled system-level integration, while CSR collaborations have supported access in underserved communities. The model is designed to be adaptable—working across geographies, languages, and school types.

Its spread has also been driven by demonstrated outcomes and strong engagement. Schools adopt Freadom not just as a tool, but as a structured literacy solution that integrates into existing systems. Research-backed evidence and continuous impact measurement have further strengthened credibility and scale.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

Freadom has continuously evolved based on classroom insights, user data, and research. We have strengthened our personalization engine to better align with learner profiles and improve engagement. Content has expanded significantly—across reading levels, formats, and cultural contexts—to ensure relevance and inclusivity.

We have also added stronger teacher-facing components, including dashboards, training programs, and classroom integration frameworks, recognizing that teacher support is critical for sustained impact.

More recently, we have integrated generative AI to address last-mile content gaps—ensuring availability of level-appropriate, safe, and contextually relevant reading material at scale.

Additionally, the model has expanded beyond reading to include communication and fluency-focused interventions, ensuring that learners not only read well but can also express themselves confidently.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

You can start by reaching out to the Freadom team through our website (https://getfreadom.com/
) to schedule a demonstration. We typically begin with a short needs assessment to understand your context, learner profiles, and goals.

Based on this, we design a customized implementation plan—including access to the platform, baseline assessments, teacher onboarding, and program structure. Schools can pilot the program with a cohort before scaling, with continuous support, monitoring, and reporting provided throughout.

Additionally, the Freadom app can be directly downloaded from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, allowing students to start their reading journey immediately.

The model is flexible and can be adapted for individual schools, networks, or large-scale system implementations.

Implementation steps

Onboarding & Setup
Students and teachers are onboarded onto the Freadom platform through app/web access.
User profiles are created with basic academic details to enable personalised learning pathways, and schools may be linked for monitoring and support.
Baseline Diagnosis
Each learner undergoes a structured diagnostic assessment to establish their reading level, fluency (ORF), vocabulary, and comprehension ability. This ensures that learning begins at the right level, not assumed grade level.
Guided Learning Path (Structured Progression)
Based on diagnostic results, learners are placed on a curriculum-aligned Guided Path, mapped to CEFR/Lexile levels. The journey is broken into weekly learning plans focusing on:
- Foundational skills (phonics, fluency)
- Vocabulary development
- Reading comprehension
Periodic checkpoints ensure measurable skill progression.
Practice & Application
Learners engage consistently with multi-format content to build depth and retention:
- Levelled reading (text + audio)
- Interactive exercises and quizzes
- Fluency practice (read-aloud)
- Vocabulary and language-building activities
This stage focuses on high-frequency exposure and skill application.
Personalised Exploration
Beyond the guided path, learners access a curated feed of stories, genres, and activities recommended by the system based on their level, interests, and engagement patterns. This builds reading habit and intrinsic motivation.
Continuous Feedback & Adaptation
The platform continuously tracks learner performance and:
- Dynamically adjusts difficulty
- Recommends next steps
- Identifies and addresses learning gaps
This creates a closed-loop learning system driven by data.
Motivation & Progress Tracking
Learners are supported through: - Rewards and streaks to drive consistency
- Leaderboards and milestones
- Progress dashboards for students, teachers, and schools
This ensures visibility, accountability, and sustained engagement.
Outcome Measurement & Reporting
Progress is measured through midline and endline assessments, benchmarking improvement in Reading fluency, Comprehension, Vocabulary. Schools and partners receive data-backed reports on learning gains and usage.
