BARABAR

Save the world with the brightest minds of the present and the past!

BARABAR is a strategic card game – an innovation in human rights education. 5 clans (ecologists, artists, scientists, entrepreneurs and activists) and 75 heroes, including Albert Einstein, Emma Watson and Sadhguru, fight to save the Earth from an apocalyptic future. An alternative to boring or incomprehensible lessons for pupils, BARABAR entertains while educating and modernizing classic teaching.

An alternative to boring or incomprehensible lessons for pupils, BARABAR entertains while educating and modernizing classic teaching. As an educational tool, it increases engagement on a multitude of topics, stimulates creative thinking and critical decision making, introduces difficult topics in a new and exciting way, develops argumentation and comminucarion skills in the players.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

BARABAR is our solution to the boring or incomprehensible lessons at school. It makes it easier for teachers and youth workers to reach children and youth on difficult topics concerning the values ​​and attitudes of a democratic society. Additionally, it improves family time as it provides an opportunity to do something meaningful and fun together while also educating both youngsters and adults.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

BARABAR is a card game that combines cooperative and competitive elements while telling stories. The game contains 15 challenges, 5 clans with 15 characters each and 14 X-Factor cards that add extra suspense to the fight against the end of the world. The players learn details about the achievements and causes of the members from the 5 clans and seek synergy among themselves to solve significant problems of our time by building a story together. BARABAR teaches tolerance and promotes awareness of serious ethical dilemmas, including censorship and restriction of freedom of expression, genocide, global drought and famine, the place and role of women in science, sustainable development and environmental protection.
BARABAR is played by a minimum of 2 people up to a group of 6-8 players. It successfully complements the learning process in disciplines such as Nature Sciences, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Ecology, Philosophy, Foreign Languages, Civic Education for students aged 10+.

How has it been spreading?

BARABAR was part of the main game and educational events in Europe since its release in 2021. The educational tool was demonstrated at the European Academy on Youth Work, it was also selected as a good practice in the field of social innovation in the Education sector at the SOCIAL INNOVATORS conference held in the Republic of Croatia in November 2021, and became a finalist and winner of an award in the LET’s GO contest for the Best Business Plan of an NGO, organized by the Bulgarian Center for Non-Profit Law. Our team presented BARABAR at Spielmesse in Essen, Ludo Ergo Sum in Madrid, Spellenspektakel in Gent, Spellenspektakel in Utrecht, Sofia Game Night, Sofia Board Game Weekend, and other game festivals in Barcelona, Cordoba, Chavdar, etc
