Bounce Forward

When it comes to mental health prevention is better than cure.

Our world has changed like never before. The pace and scale of technological change and our ability to absorb and define our worlds is more complex than ever before. Our unique model develops psychological fitness (mental resilience and emotional wellbeing), and gives them the practical tools and competencies to help young people (and the adults around them) drive the long term change themselves.

We want to see a nation where positive mental health messages help people to live mentally and emotionally well, so they can thrive in life. This will be achieved by embedding the skills and knowledge as part of core education and within school improvement and planning.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

We developed this because our psychological fitness is as important as our physical fitness. Mental ill-health is a global problem, exacerbated by the Covid19 pandemic. We have more children than ever reporting poor mental health, more time lost from work due to ill-health and support services buckling under the pressure. We have to shift how we think about and nurture mental health.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

We build psychological and emotional resilience in children and young people (aged 9-24) by training and equipping the adults around them to pass on these unique skills in a teach-the-teacher model. We offer a ground-breaking approach – one that builds the psychological skills, along with the tools and capabilities to thrive in the 21st century. To be effective the model has to work across three levels; learning, practice and application. The more the skills are used the more competent and effective individuals become when faced with real life challenges. Our approach is applicable across many domains including the communities at large and in the wider workforce. The behaviours we are building include vital skills such as flexible and realistic thinking, human connections, hope and optimism, self-regulation, self-awareness and compassion.

How has it been spreading?

• We have trained and supported over 4,785 teachers in 610 schools, reached in excess of 1 million children and over 15,000 parents.
• Through Healthy Minds research, we have proven an increase in pupils' self-assessed general health by 10 percentiles as well as improved physical health, behaviour, relationships, and life satisfaction.
• 95% of schools strongly agree that the programme have improved student’s physical wellbeing, emotional wellbeing and everyday functioning including a decrease in perceived levels of stress.
• 99% of parents strongly agreed or agreed that our programme was useful personally, would improve relationships at home and would recommend us to others.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Implementation steps

Healthy Minds
Consider within the context of school improvement plans. See it as a strategic approach to wellbeing, that is owned by senior leaders, governors, and supported by parents and the wider school community. Build into curriculum planning for sustained timetabled teaching and learning. Allocate time for teaching staff to access high quality CPD. Monitor the teaching and learning for quality and standards in line with other subject areas.
Support parents
Involve parents so they understand what their children are being taught. The adults matter, it's not just what they say and teach but the behaviour they model. Build in support for parents so they experience the skills and strategies for themselves and can support their children at home.
Whole school training
We are more than professionals, colleagues, or workers, we are people and people matter. Arrange whole staff CPD as a building block for personal development and as a strategic approach to creating a step change for a thriving environment.
