I hope CCH Protocol™ contributes to a shift from education centered primarily on correct answers, speed, and finished outputs toward learning environments that deliberately cultivate human agency, sustained attention, judgment, and self-direction. As AI makes execution and content generation increasingly accessible, education must place greater value on the upstream capacities that determine what learners choose to do, why they choose it, how they respond to uncertainty, and whether they can revise their own decisions. I want more learning environments to give children meaningful time, material resistance, open-ended choices, and real consequences rather than immediately removing difficulty or prescribing every step. The goal is not to reject technology, but to ensure that children continue developing capacities that technology cannot exercise on their behalf. Ultimately, I hope education will assess not only what learners produce, but also how they attend, decide, persist, revise, and take ownership of their learning.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

CCH Protocol™ emerged from more than a decade of art education practice and from a growing concern about what children need to develop as AI makes generating answers, images, and solutions increasingly effortless. Working in Zhubei, Taiwan, within the broader Hsinchu technology ecosystem, I encountered many families whose daily lives are closely connected to engineering and advanced technology. This raised a different educational question: if execution becomes easier, what human capacities still require deliberate cultivation?
CCH was created to explore that question through physical, material-based learning. Rather than using art primarily to teach artistic technique or produce predetermined outcomes, the protocol uses open-ended materials, sustained time, resistance, uncertainty, and consequence to create conditions in which children must decide what to do next, revise their choices, persist, and gradually take greater ownership of their actions.
The aim is to cultivate the human side of learning that cannot simply be automated: attention, judgment, agency, and adaptive decision-making.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

In practice, learners enter a screen-free studio environment with a wide range of open-ended materials but no single correct outcome to reproduce. Materials may include paper, paint, adhesive elements, found objects, textiles, boxes, structural components, and other everyday materials.
Sessions are intentionally long enough for the learner to move beyond immediate novelty. Instead of directing each step, the educator structures the environment, observes decision-making, introduces constraints or material possibilities when appropriate, and reduces intervention as the learner develops direction.
The important moments are not only the finished objects. They include what a learner chooses to keep, remove, combine, rebuild, abandon, or return to; how they respond when materials resist their intentions; how long they remain engaged; and when they begin making decisions without waiting for adult confirmation.
CCH therefore treats the studio as a learning environment in which attention, judgment, and agency become observable through action.

How has it been spreading?

CCH is currently in an early evidence-building and dissemination stage rather than large-scale implementation. Its development has begun with intensive studio-based observations in Taiwan, allowing the protocol, language, and behavioral indicators to be refined before broader replication.
The work is spreading primarily through professional documentation and knowledge sharing. I have developed case-based publications, a public website, three books in the CCH series, and written documentation connecting material practice with attention, human agency, judgment, and learning in the age of AI.
The framework is also beginning to enter international education conversations through conference submissions, academic peer-review service, and outreach to schools, galleries, education organizations, and potential institutional partners in North America.
The next phase is to move from deep longitudinal cases toward small institutional pilots, particularly in the United States, to examine how the approach transfers across learners, cultural contexts, and educational settings.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

The innovation has evolved from an intuitive open-ended studio practice into a more explicit educational protocol. Early observations focused primarily on sustained making and learner independence. Over time, recurring patterns led me to articulate a clearer framework around attention stability, material resistance, accumulated decision-making, and self-directed action.
I have also begun distinguishing between the visible artwork and the underlying decision process. This has shifted documentation toward observable moments such as persistence, revision, help-seeking, response to uncertainty, material experimentation, and decreasing reliance on adult direction.
More recently, the framework has also been explored with an adult technology professional, helping test whether material-based uncertainty and open-ended decision-making may have relevance beyond early childhood. These developments are informing the next version of the protocol and the design of future institutional pilots.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

To try CCH Protocol™, begin with a small group of learners, a screen-free space, and a varied set of open-ended materials such as paper, paint, boxes, textiles, adhesive elements, found objects, and simple structural components. Do not begin with a model to copy or a predetermined final product. Instead, create a material-rich environment and allow enough uninterrupted time for learners to explore, encounter resistance, make choices, revise, and develop their own direction.
The facilitator’s role is not to provide constant instructions, but to observe closely, ask selective questions, introduce constraints or new material possibilities when useful, and gradually reduce intervention as learners take greater ownership.
For a first trial, I recommend a small pilot of several sessions rather than a single short activity. Document not only the finished work, but also attention duration, self-initiated decisions, revisions, responses to difficulty, help-seeking, and increasing independence. CCH ART NOW is developing structured guidance, observation tools, facilitator training, and institutional pilot formats for organizations interested in implementing the protocol.

Implementation steps

Prepare an Open-Ended Material Environment
Create a screen-free workspace with a diverse selection of open-ended materials such as paper, cardboard, tape, fabric, wire, stickers, found objects, and drawing materials. Do not begin with a model to copy or a predetermined final product. Arrange materials so learners can see, touch, compare, combine, and make their own initial choices.
Introduce a Constraint, Not an Answer
Begin with a simple invitation, material condition, or constraint rather than step-by-step instructions. The educator establishes the environment and boundaries but does not prescribe what the learner should make. Allow the learner to determine an initial direction and encounter the uncertainty of deciding what to do.
Protect Sustained Making Time
Give learners an extended period of uninterrupted making. Avoid frequent demonstrations, corrections, praise, or suggestions that redirect their decisions. The goal is not constant engagement from the educator, but enough time for attention to deepen and for learners to remain with a developing problem.
Let Material Resistance Become Part of Learning
When something does not work as expected, avoid immediately solving the problem for the learner. Materials may collapse, detach, resist, or produce unexpected results. Give learners time to observe what happened, reconsider their choices, test alternatives, and decide whether to preserve, revise, remove, or rebuild.
Observe the Decision Process
Document the process rather than judging only the finished artwork. Notice where attention is sustained, where the learner hesitates, changes direction, repeats an action, asks for assistance, abandons an idea, or independently re-enters a problem. These decision points provide evidence of how the learner is navigating uncertainty.
Reflect on the Decision Journey
At the end, invite the learner to look back at what changed during the process. Ask open questions about choices, difficulties, discoveries, and revisions rather than whether the work is “good.” Record significant observations over repeated sessions to identify patterns in attention, judgment, persistence, and self-direction.
