Credentialate

Discover and share evidence of workplace skills from learning!

81% of employers prefer to hire based on skills rather than degrees. Yet only 33% of surveyed college graduates felt comfortable voicing their skills during a job search. Credentialate gives learners a voice by providing personalised evidence of their skills based on existing assessment data. Credentialate has been proven to increase learner confidence in expressing their skills in 76% of learners

Education creates opportunities for learners around the globe. However, we risk further entrenching disadvantage during the shift to a skills-based economy if learners from a low socioeconomic background or other disadvantaged group are unable to express their skills and capabilities. We want to empower educators to give learners a voice for their unique skills, at scale.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

75% of employers globally are struggling to find employees with the right skills. There are 39 million people in America who have started but never finished their degrees. There is a massive skills disconnect and all learners should have a voice and proof of their skills – with or without a degree. Skills evidence from learning can help connect learner to employer and help with equity challenges

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The Credentialate technology platform automates the extraction of existing assessment data from learning management systems to create evidence of learners’ 21st century (AKA soft skills like critical thinking & teamwork) skills as well as domain-specific skills. It generates personalised quantitative, qualitative & artifact evidence personalised to each student. By using existing data, we don’t require teachers or students to undertake additional testing–instead unleashing insights from existing data.

We received a government grant to study its efficacy at Australian & American education institutions. The efficacy research identified that 76% of learners increased their confidence in expressing their skills after receiving a personalised evidence record from Credentialate. Other research has correlated increased confidence with greater success during job interviews and skill acquisition with higher pay. Building learner confidence is a critical step in improving learners’ lives

How has it been spreading?

Initial adoption of Credentialate was by universities and vocational institutions. It has been exciting to see interest and adoption diversify both by level and by goal. Universities are curious to see whether Credentialate can increase student retention rates by delivering a credential-as-you-go solution. High schools are adopting it as well – not only to give the students their skills voice but also to reduce the time teachers spend preparing student progress reports. It’s critical for high school students to understand and develop their skills, more broadly as part of a learner passport.

Over the next 2-3 years we want to see more learners of all ages and abilities gain awareness of their current skills and pathways to pursue their passion and interests, and achieve their potential.
