Lumineer Expeditions

Lumineer Expeditions are STEM workshops that develop a love for science and technology that is fun, playful, human, and ethical.

Lumineer Expeditions are hands-on workshops where children get to dream up fantastical ideas and make them in our makerspace, purpose built and designed for kids. We teach STEM playfully and joyfully, and in a human and social context. We empower children with the tools and knowledge to invent, design, and construct new innovations, grounded by consideration for ethics and human well being.

Our future world needs to be built and architected by leaders who not only have the STEM skills to invent and build, but are also empathetic, and as fluent in emotional intelligence as cognitive intelligence.

About the innovation

Why do we need to teach STEM holistically?

In 2018, teaching STEM as part of core curriculum is table stakes. What comes next?

Our work in education is to shape human beings who go on to shape society. We care about structural innovation – innovation that leads to greater capacity for emotional and cognitive understanding of ourselves, how we construct society, and leads to more equitable distribution of and access to resources.

It’s clear that by now, all schools should be incorporating STEM and coding education as a fundamental part of their curriculum. By now, these subjects are just mere table stakes.

We should be talking about what’s next. Beyond learning the basic tools of programming, scientific hypothesis, probability and statistics, engineering, etc. children should be learning how to synthesize STEM, SEL, and humanities holistically.

Not only should students be able to engineer and make, they should also be able to understand the human and societal context in which these tools and systems interoperate.

We teach STEM as part of a foundational whole, that underpins all learning and making, rather than as silo’ed subjects. For example, when we teach robotics, we integrate the overall context of computational data, computer science, design, human rights, ethics, civics, algorithm design – into a cohesive whole. When we teach about the extraordinary capabilities

Cultivate human empathy by working through a design process
Often times, STEM skills are taught in silos, as standalone subjects or content areas. Sometimes STEM skills are taught within the context of Project Based Learning, but not grounded enough in real world human needs and problem solving.

Consider working through a design process framework, that helps you identify the key human needs impacted by science and technology, and paths that can help you understand and contextualize the reason for why we learn STEM in the first place.
