Today, learners are indulged; there are countless tools which offload work to AI. However, using AI for learning creates its own challenges.
Philosophy, a subject I am deeply interested in, suffers acutely from the misuse of AI. Studying philosophical work(s) through AI leads to a paucity of two things: training and truth.
AI digests text and regurgitates content for the student, requiring almost no cognitive exercise from the student. Students are not encouraged to develop the ability to analyse texts. Further, AI is unlikely to meaningfully critique the ideas of the individual it is tutoring. This deprives students of a second skill, the ability to defend or sublate their ideas.
Philosophical ideas — which are often abstractions themselves — are presented by AI in simplified forms, at severe cost to their completeness. Consequently, learning from an AI tutor rarely provides students with philosophical insights that withstand critique.
The example of philosophy merely illustrates a more general problem: AI is employed for educational tasks on nearly all subjects. This issue prompted me to create Organon. I created the site to make studying literary works more accessible without forfeiting students’ involvement in, and control over, their learning process.
Organon is a website with three literary tools. The first is Virgil, which provides instant exegesis in the margins of texts. The second is Quixote, which reviews a learner’s writing and suggests general directions for further writing. The third is Socrates, which critiques writing from the standpoints of logic, rhetoric, and clarity.
Organon is a tool for all ages and intellectual levels, so I have chosen not to introduce hard limits on its analytical faculties. I have faith that students interested enough to seek out tools like Organon will be disciplined in their use of the site.
Organon is built on two foundations of AI. First, the website itself automates the generation of AI feedback (via Gemini API) to carry out its agents’ work. Second, the website was designed, generated, and hosted through Base44, a website which facilitates coding via communication with AI, which then carries out the development.
Currently, my innovation is only in use among people I have told via word of mouth. I have also shown some classmates/teachers my innovation.
The website can be easily accessed using this link: organon.base44.app
If the analysis using the global API key does not work, it has likely run out of credits on its free plan. Currently, I am not financing the project, so users are advised to create their own free API key from suppliers like Groq, OpenAI, or Gemini.
