Patio Vivo

We transform school grounds, so they promote play, outdoor learning and contact with nature.

At Patio Vivo, we transform school playgrounds into Learning Landscapes. To acquire 21st century skills, educational spaces in contact with nature that promote the development of physical, cognitive and socio-emotional capabilities are required. In 2019, Unicef highlighted us as one of the 7 innovative initiatives in early childhood in Latin America and the Caribbean.

We work with the premise that the schoolyard can provide powerful daily social, physical and emotional learning opportunities for students. We are always innovating, so that children and adolescents can develop their full potential. Improving wellbeing, the sense of belonging to the school and strengthening the sense of community. For more welcoming education, in line with 21st century.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Chilean schools present several problems of violence, childhood obesity and low contact with nature. Research reports that the increasing decrease in active outdoor play negatively impacts the physical, socio-emotional and cognitive development of children and teenagers. We contribute to the daily experience of children and influence these indicators, improving their well-being.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

At Patio Vivo, we understand Learning Landscapes as the articulation between space, culture and the community's perspective, transforming schoolyards into places of free learning, encounter and contact with nature. For this, we establish a dialogue between architecture, education and the actors of the educational establishment, which allows the playground to be designed with a pedagogical intention. Using natural elements, we design multifunctional structures for play, outdoor classes and the enhancement of heritage identity. We promote environmental care and the development of 21st century skills. We work with kindergartens, schools and high schools.
In the context of the Pandemic, we developed the Recreation at Home program and we are promoting open classrooms which, as the North American Academy of Pediatrics suggests, being outdoors are the safest space to do classes.

How has it been spreading?

Since 2014, we have created more than 90 Learning Landscapes, benefiting more than 53,000 students, in 9 regions in Chile. We have participated in international seminars, to promote a culture of play in childhood, in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Germany, Belgium, Japan and Sweden. Last year, co-founder Ángela Ibáñez, participated in a forum about Green Futures, at COP 28, Dubai. We were one of 13 organizations highlighted by Children & Nature Network for Greening School Grounds and Outdoor Learning. We participated in the documentary The Beginning of Life 2, by Alana / Netflix, where the importance of the relationship between children and nature is addressed. Our expectation in the next 3 years is achieve public policies that promote outdoor play as a necessity.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

In each project, we carry out an educational diagnosis of the establishment, considering its institutional educational project and the community's perspective. We take care of the construction and training for its use. Through the transformation of space we promote good coexistence, contact with nature and learning from experience.
