period poverty and education

place Uganda

The loud silence

It is alarming that millions of impoverished women worldwide lack access to period products. The inability to access these basic necessities forces women to miss school or work during menstruation. This issue is pervasive across my village and other rural areas globally, perpetuating teenage pregnancies, early marriages, school dropouts, and reinforcing the cycle of poverty.

My ultimate aspiration is to witness a world where girls can access education without having to drop out due to the lack of sanitary pads.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Numerous girls are missing out on educational opportunities due to the issue of period poverty. This predicament often leads them to feel ashamed and uncomfortable, ultimately resulting in their discontinuation of schooling.

Why would a girl miss education due to lack of a sanitary pad?

What does your innovation look like in practice?

As a proactive measure to combat the issue of period poverty, I have implemented a project that involves counseling and providing sewing training to underprivileged girls. Additionally, we have taken the initiative to manufacture and distribute reusable sanitary pads to such individuals within schools. Our efforts have been fruitful, as we have already served over 100 girls with our sanitary pads. Going forward, we intend to sustain and expand this project.

How has it been spreading?

the next goals are to look for ways on how to make girls stay in school by looking for supporters who can help with their tuition, and to those who can help with scholastic materials.
the other goal is to make an organisation which is non profit to continue supporting the unprivileged girls.
