Skateistan- Safe Families and Communities Project

Empowering children through skateboarding and education, and creating leaders for a better world

Skateistan is an award-winning NGO empowering children through education and skateboarding in Afghanistan, Cambodia and South Africa, with a focus on reaching girls, children from low income backgrounds and children living with a disability. At our Skate Schools, we aim to create a safety network to benefit all aspects of our students’ lives, to improve their wellbeing and ability to learn.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Many Skateistan students have had adverse childhood experiences which are impacting how they express themselves- identified through class observations and conversations with students and parents. In order to succeed in school, be healthy, and learn new skills, children need safe and fun learning spaces, positive role models, family support and safety in all aspects of their lives.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The Skate School is a safe space for children to play and learn after school, keeping them off the streets and away from violence. Our Safe Families and Community Project introduces regular workshops (in person and online) for parents and staff, home visits and a community referral network, and classes to prevent bullying and foster role models.

How has it been spreading?

Parenting skills workshops have provided families and staff with tools to help them better understand children’s needs and behaviours. Skateistan has become a beacon of hope for community members who see the value of our programs and understand that Skateistan is a safe space not only for their children but for the family as a whole.

We aim to increase the frequency and quality of home visits, strengthen our relationship with families and stronger referral partnerships to address issues outside the scope of our programs, such as complex child protection cases.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Contact: Skateistan’s Programs Director, Talia Kaufman (talia@skateistan.org). (1) Holding events for parents and the wider community so they can observe the benefits of your programs, (2) hire Community Educators who can build and strengthen positive relationships with students’ families and community leaders and (3) form local partnerships that help your organisation access new communities.

Impact & scalability

Impact & Scalability

Skateistan fuels students' passion for learning and exploring the world through sports and play. In contexts of conflict and violence, this project makes children feel safe providing them with a hobby. Workshops for family and community engagement are an essential part of this innovation in order to foster safe spaces and nurturing learning environments for children.

HundrED Academy Reviews

This program could easily be started anywhere in the world quite easily. Many of the concepts dealt with in the countries where the innovation started can be applied anywhere in the world.

Incredible initiative that target vulnerable communities, not only kids but also the families. It fills the important gap of creating a safe space and role models for those vulnerable kids and families.
