We created CholPori to equip teachers and empower students with relevant, modular, low-cost materials to positively impact low literacy and numeracy rates. Bangladesh has achieved a high enrollment rate (27M students in K-8 and 904 thousand teachers), but more than 1/3 of 3rd graders can’t read and over 70% of 5th graders lack Maths skills at grade level with an alarming dropout rate of 29%.
CholPori delivers quality learning content through a personalised and gamified web-app which can be used by teachers in class to improve learning and participation. Currently the site contains class 4, 5, 6 lessons for maths, English (aligned to the Bangladesh national curriculum) and over 80 illustrated books in English and Bangla.
In class, CholPori is used by educators through a projector or screen. The materials help the teacher to engage students in discussion, illustrate the theoretical parts of the lesson, and inspire curiosity. We have conducted two long-term pilot studies in under-served public schools, the results of which show a marked improvement in classroom engagement, student and teacher satisfaction and most importantly, academic performance.
In our partner schools, CholPori provides teacher training, monitoring and support. The platform and the service improve teacher performance. The materials reduce class preparation time and improve the classroom experience.
Since January 2024, we've gained over 7,000 independent users in addition to our existing classroom accounts. In the 2023 academic year, CholPori was used in grade 4 classrooms across 57 schools in Dhaka and Chittagong. This was followed by an expansion in the 2024 academic year, with CholPori implemented in grade 4 classrooms in an additional 11 schools and grade 6 classrooms in another 11 schools, all located in Dhaka and Chittagong. We have been and continue to observe teacher-student engagement and track student progress within these schools. Additionally, CholPori reading materials are used in several English medium schools in Dhaka.
