Innovationlab

place Netherlands

A campfire in cyberspace

For years kids are in classrooms that haven’t changed for years and years: they are mostly sitting in rows or sometimes in small groups. Our innovationlab is very different. It has learning areas where kids can choose were to work depending on the subject or kind of work. During the lessons we use technology to teach kids/students/teachers digital skills and the 21st century skills.

I hope to see that the original, old-fashioned classrooms will slowly but surely change into innovationlabs. Every classroom will have different kinds of learning areas. Lessons will change too, because of the lay-out of the classroom. Technology will be used as an aid to help kids learn in the best way possible.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

When I was working at a primary school I developed a Skillslab. A place where all the children learned the 21st century skills with the help of technology. After five years I got the chance to design a similar thing at the Thomas More University. Now I’m a teacher trainer and use the innovationlab to teach future primary school teacher about technology and digital skills in a unique classroom.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

It’s a classroom in our university, with different learning areas: a campfire, watering hole, sandpit, cave, play area and mountain top.

How has it been spreading?

At the moment there are 20 primary schools with a Skillslab or innovationlab. There are 3 other teacher trainer universities with a similar kind of innovationlab.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Read this article by David Thornburg: https://homepages.dcc.ufmg.br/~angelo/webquests/metaforas_imagens/Campifires.pdf to learn more about the different learning areas.
