Little Scientists of the Drylands helps young children learn science by exploring the world around them. Our long-term dream is to make Little Scientists of the Drylands available to children in many dryland communities and eventually beyond them. We want to see an education system where every child, even in a remote or low-resource area, has the opportunity to learn through practical activities, curiosity, and creativity. Through this innovation, we hope to change learning from simply memorising information to asking questions, experimenting, creating, and solving real-life problems. We want teachers to feel confident using simple local materials to make lessons more practical and enjoyable. Our biggest dream is to raise a generation of confident young learners who see challenges such as drought, water scarcity, and climate change not only as problems, but also as opportunities to think, innovate, and create solutions for their communities.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Little Scientists of the Drylands, was created to give children in dryland communities the opportunity to learn through discovery, creativity, and practical activities. We noticed that many children have limited access to science materials, laboratories, and hands-on learning experiences. Yet, their environment is full of opportunities to learn.
We created this innovation to turn everyday materials and local challenges into simple learning activities. Children can explore topics such as water, soil, plants, weather, waste, and the environment through safe experiments and observation.
Our goal is to make science learning accessible to every child, regardless of where they live or the resources available in their school. Most importantly, we want children to grow up as curious, confident, creative, and capable problem-solvers who can use their knowledge to improve their communities.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

In practice, Little Scientists of the Drylands works by giving children simple activities that allow them to learn by doing. Teachers use materials that are easily available around the community, such as bottles, water, soil, stones, leaves, and other safe everyday items.
Children work together to explore questions such as: How can we save water? Why do some plants grow better than others? What happens when we mix different types of soil? How can we reduce waste?
Through these activities, children observe, experiment, discuss their ideas, and share what they discover. In this way, the classroom becomes a small science laboratory, even without expensive equipment.

How has it been spreading?

The innovation has been spreading mainly through teachers, schools, parents, and community members. Teachers who learn the activities share them with other teachers and use them with more children. Parents and community members also support children by providing simple, locally available materials.
We also encourage children to share what they learn with their families and friends. Because the activities are low-cost, simple, and easy to repeat, other teachers and schools can adopt the approach without needing expensive equipment. Our goal is to continue reaching more schools and dryland communities through teacher training, community partnerships, and sharing successful activities.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

We have continued to improve Little Scientists of the Drylands based on what children and teachers need. We started with simple science activities and have added more hands-on experiments using locally available materials.
We have also included activities related to real dryland challenges such as water scarcity, drought, soil, plants, weather, and waste. We make the activities easier and safer for young children and encourage teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving.
We also listen to teachers and children and use their feedback to improve the activities. Our innovation continues to grow as we discover new ways to make science learning more practical, enjoyable, and accessible to children in dryland communities.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

To try Little Scientists of the Drylands, bring together a small group of children and choose a simple science topic from their daily lives, such as water, soil, plants, or weather.

Use easy-to-find materials and give the children a simple activity to explore. Let them work together, ask questions, make observations, and share what they discover.

Teachers can do these activities regularly and create new ones based on local challenges. The innovation is easy to start because it does not require expensive equipment—only simple materials, guidance, and children who are ready to explore.
