About the innovation

About the Nube Method

Nube was born in 2012 in Chile with the aim of bringing Contemporary Art to Education.

Inspired at the artist's workshop, we have designed a pedagogical model (The Nube Method) that develops and enhances essential creative skills to face the new challenges raised by contemporary societies.

Our method is based on a network of artists who understand the educational work as an extension of their artistic expression, and the experimental dynamics of the workshop, as vehicles for creative work. Through collaborative creation strategies, artists-professors, designers and researchers carry out activities based on simple and easily accessible materials.

We have been able to measure some successful indicators of our model. The most relevant are those that show increases in the ability to associate and interpret images; willingness to experiment and collaborative work and an open and democratizing perception regarding access to art and culture in general.

PREMISE

We seek to broaden the idea of sustainability towards an ethic of everyday transformation, defining as resources both environmental inputs and teamwork. At Nube we are convinced that creativity is the renewable resource of the future and that it must be empowered to develop meaningful learning.

SCHOOL

Nube Escuela encompasses all the lines of action geared to direct engagement with educational communities, mostly students and teachers:

CURRICULAR

Nube carries out a program of artistic activities for elementary-graders at four schools in Las Condes; the program is a curricular art class. Every week, students and their teachers come to our studio to work on exercises that enable them to deploy their creative resources and bodily energy for a meaningful learning activity. The annual programming is geared to a number of different intersecting aims: the issues that each of the artists that works at Nube faces in his or her own studio; the interdisciplinary theoretical contents that can be addressed through practical activities, the use of recycled, low-cost, and readily available materials that form part of our daily environment; and the curricular requirements of the Department of Education (its learning objectives).

LABS Art+

Labs Art+ is our formula to take the curricular experience to new audiences. Each Lab is focused on a contingent theme that is addressed through a short number of activities, and can be done either in our studio or through online encounters. Labs Art+ have the power to reach a broader number of students and stimulate divergent thinking by addressing a topic through different perspectives.

EDUCATIONAL VISITS

The artist’s studio has, historically, been the place where creative processes are forged, a place where joint work and permanent experimentation allow new things to happen every day. Since 2019, the Nube studio has been preparing encounters with students in other grades (that is, those that do not participate in the annual program) as part of the “Pedagogical Scouting” program. An invitation to develop the curiosity part and parcel of an artist’s studio surrounded by nature.

TEACHER TRAINING

The Artist-Teacher School seeks to leave installed capacities in teachers that allow them to enhance socio-emotional skills and Indicators of Personal and Social Development in students. Throughout our courses, workshops and training sessions, teachers develop contemporary artist-inspired skills, acquire tools for designing interdisciplinary activities, and become part of a collaborative network of artists and teachers. In this way they are be able to contribute in their educational communities to the decompartmentation of pedagogical work and to the integral development of their students through artistic education.

EVERY PLACE IS A PLACE FOR EDUCATION

At Nube we believe that education through art has no limits. So we develop different projects that seek to reach all people.

Nube Va is a nomadic program that creates interactive installations for different places such as festivals, museums, public or private institutions.

Nube Plaza is a program to design, together with children, artists and architects, sculpture-games for the public space.

Nube Editions and Nube TV seek to reach remote communities by generating online and print resources.

During the COVID 19 crisis, in order to ensure the continuity of education to our students, we developed our Nube en Casa (at Home) transforming the experience of our workshop into a set of analog materials and online resources delivered to every family from our curricular program. Complementary, we carried out monthly training sessions to teachers all over Chile to broaden the number of students benefited by our services. These activities, videos and resources were designed by Nube artists using exclusively materials available at any home. The initiative is part of Aprendo en Casa, a website that gathers educational resources to be shared with students all along Latin America.

Impact & scalability

Impact & Scalability

Nube Lab aims to integrate contemporary art in education. Their method, based on building collaborative networks of artists as educators, has proven numerous successful experiences, that has democratised access to art and culture for more than eight thousand children in Chile. Nube Lab uses accessible materials that are easy to find, which gives the project the potential to scale.

HundrED Academy Reviews

The long-term training of teachers and artists allows the innovation to expand nationally. They also have the potential to scale to other countries through the development of virtual training.

Nube Lab generates impact because it allows children to learn and think about global problems through art, also teachers are trained in order to guide students. The work with artists and workshops visits is a way of learning outside the classroom.

Implementation steps

Nube's workshops, its routines, and its processes
Nube's workshop is located in a park, a very place and context from the traditional school. Nube's workshop routines are like a COMPASS: instances that guide a course of action that opens freer avenues for experimentation. There are three basic instances in the development of the workshop: the beginning (EDUCATIONAL ACT), the development (STEP BY STEP), and the closing (THE BLACKBOARD and THE SECRET WORD).
Part 1 - EDUCATIONAL ACT:
These activities are implemented at the beginning of each session to establish theoretical links between practical work and the learning objectives assigned in the Visual Arts curriculum. Educational acts can take various forms, such as a bodily action, an intervention on a sheet of paper, or a group conversation. Its purpose is for students to intuit what they are going to do in each session and for teachers to present the objective they will work on.
Part 2 - STEP BY STEP
The second part of the workshop which has an extended duration, consists of the process of each activity. The program provides a guide of the steps to follow for optimal development. The Learning Objectives, the strategies, the intersections with other subjects, and the keywords are complementary information so that the teaching artist and the teacher can plan and guide the activity, giving greater emphasis to the learning expected in said processes.
Part 3 - THE BLACKBOARD AND THE SECRET WORD
The closing is the moment to integrate the dimension of the activity and its process (Sensitive Exploration Reflection and Projection) and to address Learning Objectives 4 and 5 of the Visual Arts curriculum according to the Ministry of Education in Chile.
