Students get more engaged in education when they see how it can benefit their future career

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

While building science education centres, I had hundreds of parents asking how to help their kids to choose career direction after the highschools. Research data shows that existing career guiding system fails young people on a massive scale - low level of engagement in education, high dropout, high education-job mismatche. The future of work is more unpredictable than ever due to AI dusruptions.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Web application with psychometric assessment and career suggestions - what to study, in which industry and what work environment (role).

How has it been spreading?

Schools (mostly high-schools) use it as part of career education or english language classes. Universities use it to identify future talents - entrepreneurs, researchers, innovators; also to identify possible talent-study programme mismatch (dropouts) to suggest better study programme. Companies use it to find interns that fit their industry, needed competencies and work environment.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Implementation steps

Teacher onboarding
Providing instructions (writen or video) to career or other (english, psychology, social) teachers on how to use Orbit8 in a class-room. Explaining to teachers how using Orbit8 can help them save time and make learning for children fun.
Class-room assessment
Teacher explaining to students why career choices are important (from step 1) and what they will get from Orbit8. Students registering on Orbit8 platform. Then spending 20-30min on the assessment. At the end teacher gives instructions to discuss results with parents. Teacher printing out or sending career suggestions to parents by email.
Family discussion
Children talking to parents about their experience and showing printouts to parents. Discussing what career directions would be most interesting for a student
Follow-up classroom discussion
Students presenting their career findings in front of the classroom - explaining what career combinations (study direction - industry - work role) they have chosen and why. Strenghtening their career learning and learning from others various career directions.
Private career consulting
After students have complete assessment, they can apply for individual career counsulting with career teacher. It will save time for a career teacher as student does not have to complete additional assessments. Career councelor can use enterprise version of Orbit8 to see the student assessment results.
Student Analytics
Teachers and School management can use the Enterprise version to see analytics from students who have completed the career assessment. They can extract useful information on - what are most popular study direction (set of competencies) to improve teaching methodology; what are the most "popular" industries for children to include topics about those industries in classroom exercises; what are student futuree roles (entrepreneur, innovator, researcher, etc) to develope more personalized curriculum
