Smarty Health Info Hub was created to address the urgent need for reliable health education in Uganda, where 70% of the disease burden is preventable. With misinformation rampant, Smarty offers engaging, accurate health and climate information through digital tools, empowering youth to make informed decisions about their health.
In practice, Smarty Health Info Hub is a dynamic digital platform that integrates various interactive elements to educate and engage youth on health and climate change. It features podcasts, animated videos, gamified learning modules, and comprehensive online courses for students aged 10-26. These tools make learning enjoyable and accessible, ensuring complex health and climate information is easily understood. Smarty also includes peer-to-peer sessions where students discuss and learn from each other, fostering a collaborative learning environment. By partnering with schools and community organizations, Smarty is implemented in educational settings for maximum impact. Additionally, it includes in-person activities like Zumba sessions, tree planting, and health workshops to reinforce digital learning with practical experiences, empowering young people to lead healthier, more sustainable lives.
Smarty Health Info Hub has been spreading through strategic partnerships with schools and community organizations across Uganda. Our interactive content reaches a growing online community through social media, supported by on-ground workshops and events. Peer-to-peer learning sessions have created a ripple effect, with students advocating for Smarty within their own networks and communities.
Since 2021, Smarty Health Info Hub has evolved significantly beyond its original design. We developed SmartyCareer, a career personality assessment tool built on a bank of 60 questions across seven distinct archetypes, tailored to three age brackets, helping young people connect their health knowledge to future career pathways in health and related fields. Our curriculum has also been restructured into a comprehensive three-tier architecture spanning 22 modules, allowing learners to progress systematically from foundational health literacy to advanced topics. These additions reflect our commitment to continuous improvement based on learner needs and emerging health and climate priorities facing African youth.
