Anti-Racist Art Teachers

Working towards removing biases, stereotypes, and false narratives in art education.

Anti-Racist Art Teachers work toward removing biases, stereotypes, and false narratives in art education. We believe it is important for educators to begin to learn, reflect, and reform their curriculum and instruction. Together we created our site, to provide a free and centralized location for educators to access culturally relevant and responsive resources.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Art is a visual language and its role in activism is vital. Our images are created not as performative allyship, but as a way to bring attention to the importance of doing the work.

Anti-bias, anti-racist education involves deep and constant reflection. Our image serve as a visual reminder of the value of this work.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Our site is a collaborative effort made by and for art teachers. We are not experts, but among us we have decades of experience. We do not have all the answers. We are here to listen, learn, grow and lift each other up.

We believe in collaboration, intersectionality, a culturally responsive classroom environment, and amplifying BIPOC voices while building allies for progress.

How has it been spreading?

We have been maintaining and expanding our website, social media, and Facebook groups. We have also been facilitating antiracist professional development and workshops for visual arts educators.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Please find us and our work on our site: https://www.antiracistartteachers.org or follow us on instagram @antiracistartteachers

HundrED Academy Reviews

Anti-Racist Teachers could be easily applicable in Brazilian reality. This innovation would be a big ally in the fight against structural racism in the country. Students and art teachers would benefit greatly from the initiative.

I see huge potential impact for this initiative to address race inequality in art and education. Artistic expression and representation in art is critical and this a relevant, powerful and unique initiative that would make a big difference in the UK.
