We dream of classrooms where curiosity drives lessons and students see challenges as opportunities to create, explore, and grow. Picture learners diving into problems with enthusiasm, collaborating in ways that spark unexpected ideas and solutions. We want students to feel the thrill of discovery and the pride of persistence, knowing that creativity and teamwork can unlock endless possibilities.

About the innovation

Why Destination Imagination (DI)?

The Destination Imagination Challenge Experience is all about sparking creativity, fostering collaboration, and empowering students to tackle real-world problems. At the heart of the experience is our Creative Process — a proven system that helps kids unlock their innovative potential and transform ideas into action. Through this process, students don’t just solve problems, they learn how to think critically, work together, and develop solutions that can make a difference.

Here’s how it works: teams of 2-7 students, ranging from pre-K to university level, come together to take on one of our open-ended Team Challenges. These Challenges are designed to push the boundaries of creativity, with a focus on areas like Technical, Scientific, Engineering, Fine Arts, Improv, and Service Learning. The team’s journey begins with selecting the Challenge that best sparks their passion and curiosity.

Guided by a Team Manager—typically a teacher or a parent—students use our Creative Process to brainstorm, plan, and build their solution. They work collaboratively, experimenting with different ideas and learning how to manage a project from start to finish. Their final outcome? A captivating 8-minute presentation that highlights everything they’ve created, built, and brought to life on their own.

Along the way, students also practice skills like time management, communication, and teamwork. At the end of the process, they present their solutions at a local tournament, where their work is judged and celebrated. Each team also faces an Instant Challenge at the tournament—an exciting, timed activity that tests their ability to think quickly, collaborate under pressure, and apply their creative skills in the moment.

The Destination Imagination Challenge Experience isn’t just a competition. It’s a journey of growth, learning, and discovery that helps students build confidence and develop skills they’ll carry with them throughout their lives.

Implementation steps

Learn More

You can join a monthly webinar or you can book a free consultation to see how the Challenge Experience can work for your students.

Purchase a Team Number
Team Numbers can be purchased starting in August for each Challenge Experience season and provide access to essential materials, including Team Challenges, the Roadmap, practice Instant Challenges, and our exclusive online training platform for Team Managers. For details on costs, please visit our Pricing Page. Additionally, all U.S. Team Managers must complete our background check requirements.
Get connected
After purchasing your Team Number, your local DI Affiliate will provide information about in-person training events and your team’s tournaments, which typically take place between January and April.

If your area doesn’t have a DI Affiliate to host a tournament, we’ll work with you to find a convenient tournament location and invite your team to participate in Global Finals, held each May in the United States.

Guide Your Team
Destination Imagination provides all the tools you need to support your team. Our Roadmap for Team Managers offers meeting plans, activities, and tips to help teams develop skills in creative problem-solving, collaboration, project management, and more. Our Rules of the Road resource ensures teams follow rules and guidelines as they work on their solutions.

With these resources, you’ll empower your team to thrive, think boldly, and create something extraordinary.

Register for and Attend a Tournament
Register for a tournament through your local DI Affiliate using your team number. At the tournament, your team will present their solution to a panel of trained Appraisers and a live audience. They’ll also tackle an on-the-spot Instant Challenge, which will be revealed only when they arrive. Beyond presenting their own work, tournaments also offer teams a unique opportunity to watch and cheer for others, gaining inspiration from a variety of creative solutions to the same Challenge.
Reflect and celebrate
DI tournaments are the grand finale of each team’s Creative Process journey, celebrating creativity, collaboration, and growth. Teams receive scores and positive feedback to inspire reflection on their progress. This reflection helps teams celebrate successes, recognize skills gained, and solidify durable skills like communication and resilience. Every moment of reflection and celebration at tournaments becomes a stepping stone toward future success.
