Only a small percentage of schools can provide a laptop or tablet for every student. For example, based on the last PISA survey (OECD 2019), surprisingly two-thirds of 15 year old students do not have sufficient access to computers in schools in OECD countries.
A group of organisations ranging from ICT leasing companies to software houses decided to help provide students with the computers they need for their studies in Finland. They have been collecting computers which are no longer being used for business, checking that they work properly and installing office software on them before handing them over. The receiving schools and students have been identified together with theFinnish National Agency for Educationand the Association of Finnish Municipalities.
The work began in 2015 and is supported by the president of Finland, Sauli Niinistö. At this current time of school closures due to COVID-19, the computer donations have increased exponentially and hundreds of computers have been donated in the last few weeks.
