Leaders driving digital transformation across entire education systems must navigate a huge array of possibilities and contexts, all while handling multiple pressures. This fellowship brings those leaders together to foster the knowledge, skills and network to drive positive change through EdTech on a large scale. It bridges gaps between research, policy, and practice.

The HP Cambridge Partnership for Education EdTech Fellows are exceptional leaders committed to transforming their education systems for the better. The skills, knowledge and networks they nurture through the fellowship equip them to drive more effective and equitable use of technology on a large scale to improve learning for millions of children.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Technology has the potential to improve education at scale, but only when it is approached holistically and strategically. To achieve quality education for all children, we must invest in the key decision makers and implementers leading digital programmes across nations. We must support them to foster the knowledge, skills and network to drive transformational change.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

The fellowship is open to government and organisation leaders driving national and regional technology programmes to transform education for 3 – 18 year olds. Extensive scholarships are available to support them to join us.

The fellowship comprises five to seven months of study, both online and in an intensive academy week at a Cambridge University college, and lasting global alumni network. This includes weekly online tutorials, fireside chats with thought leaders, group work, individual assignments and presentations, and 1:1 coaching.

With the support of experts from leading universities and technology companies, fellows explore:
- latest research
- practical case studies
- user-centred design
- mobilising and inspiring different stakeholders
- adaptive leadership

Fellows also develop a prototype EdTech solution and explore how to successfully scale it.

Throughout, fellows create strong connections with one another which support continuous learning and potential collaborations.

How has it been spreading?

In early 2023, we welcomed our very first fellows: 27 exceptional leaders from 13 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. We opened a second wave for applicants from the Gulf region later in the year, with 15 top innovators joining us from five further countries.

With the fellowship gaining momentum as a global initiative, a year later we invited leaders from South and Southeast Asia to join us in June 2024. More fellows will be invited to join in the coming months and years.

In addition to rolling the fellowship out across different regions, we are spreading its core ideas through a free three-month online course covering the top insights and approaches of the programme. More than 900 people have registered for this additional course.

We regularly invite applications for new fellows to join us, and you are very welcome to apply. We announce new application windows for different regions on our website: edtechfellowship.cambridge.org.

Implementation steps

Apply to join the HP Cambridge Partnership for Education EdTech Fellowship

Complete the online application form which includes sharing insights into the biggest opportunities and challenges for EdTech in your country, your hopes for the future, and your experiences in the past. Please note, there is no minimum academic requirement to apply for the fellowship. All applications are reviewed by the admissions committee.

Review your offer and join an onboarding call

Successful applicants are invited to join the fellowship, many of whom will also be offered a scholarship. You then review your offer and let us know if you’d like to accept it. If yes, you join an onboarding call to meet some of the team and find out more about what’s ahead.

Embark on your online studies with tutors and fellows

For all applicants who’ve accepted their offers, you will embark on your online studies with the other fellows in your group. You will meet your tutors, have weekly live sessions, as well as reading, self-study and assignments during the week. Classes will run for five to seven months.

Come to Cambridge for our residential academy

During your online studies, you will be invited to visit Cambridge for a week for a residential academy. You will stay in an historic Cambridge University college and collaborate with other fellows, tutors and experts for an intensive week. In the evenings, you will have the opportunity to meet leaders and experts from across Cambridge and the UK, sharing dinners and ideas.

Attend 1:1 coaching

Alongside your online studies, you will be invited to 1:1 coaching sessions.

Design and present your EdTech prototype solution and explore scalability

In the final modules of your online studies, you will create an EdTech solution and design approaches to scale it across your education system. At the end of the study programme, you will present your solution to your tutors and peers.

Graduate as an HP Cambridge Partnership for Education EdTech Fellow!

Following your presentation, you will graduate with your peers as an HP Cambridge Partnership for Education EdTech Fellow.

Support your colleagues to explore your new approaches and tools

Your colleagues may wish to join the free, three-month online short course which covers some of the top takeaways from the full fellowship programme. This will help align your thinking as a team and encourage collaboration around potential new approaches and tools.

Keep putting your knowledge and skills into practice, and embracing your alumni network

Following graduation, there will be formal and informal opportunities to connect with other HP Cambridge Partnership for Education EdTech Fellows in our global alumni community, both from your group and beyond. The HP Cambridge Partnership for Education EdTech Fellowship team will check in with all fellows before, during, and after your studies to understand the impact and reach of the programme and continue to learn and improve.
