Social-Emotional Learning for all children!

Navegar Seguro is a program designed to develop SEL skills in children from kindergarten to 11th grade to help them manage the risks in their environment, build positive relationships, and develop their life project. During the COVID-19 pandemic we implemented Navegar Seguro online and designed resources to address the increased social and emotional distress caused by the pandemic.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

Navegar Seguro was developed to better address the social and emotional learning needs of children from 11 public schools in vulnerable districts in Bogotá, Colombia. Navegar Seguro has the purpose of helping students develop their SEL skills to manage the risks present in their environment, build positive relationships, and develop their life project.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Navegar Seguro includes 24 class sessions from kindergarten to 11th grade, adapted from the Step-By-Step WBG toolkit. Each session centers around one of the 18 SEL skills from our framework, with 6 additional sessions: three of them reinforce emotional awareness, empathy, and stress management by practicing mindfulness, two of them reinforce responsible decision making with an emphasis on caring about public goods and using social networks responsibly, and one of them reinforces self-concept and self-care of the own body. After a group of sessions is implemented, teachers carry out a self-assessment session, in which students (anonymously and autonomously) reflect on their SEL process and identify which skills they need to work on more. Following the belief that educators need to develop their own SEL skills to foster them in students, teachers and counselors also self-assess their SEL process and create an improvement plan for the skills they want to work on.

How has it been spreading?

Alianza Educativa has opened the possibility for other schools to implement Navegar Seguro within their classrooms. Anyone can download both the teachers’ and the students’ guidebooks for grades kindergarten to 11th grade by going to the Alianza Educativa website (https://alianzaeducativa.edu.co/navegar-seguro/).

Navegar Seguro has also been uploaded in Clic Socioemocional, a Colombian open use platform that hosts teaching resources for Latin American educators, designed to promote Social Emotional Learning. It can be found here: https://clicsocioemocional.com/?s=navegar+seguro

If I want to try it, what should I do?

You can go to the Alianza Educativa website, or the Clic Socioemocional website, and download the teacher and students guidebook. The teachers’ guidebook has a comprehensive explanation of the SEL skills framework used in the program, as well as a step-by-step guide for each session. Other SEL activities resources can be found here: shorturl.at/ptLS3

Impact & scalability

Impact & Scalability

Navegar Seguro offers a comprehensive learning SEL material for teachers and students completely free of charge. It also provides online training in well-structured sessions focusing on its own SEL framework with an easy-to-use toolkit for implementation. With its strong partnerships, this innovation has the potential to scale and be implemented
at the education system level.

Implementation steps

Incorporate Navegar Seguro to your curriculum

You can find Navegar Seguro in Alianza Educativa's website https://alianzaeducativa.edu.co/navegar-seguro/

Once you have clicked the link, you will find two buttons. The first one will lead you to the teacher's guidebooks folder and the second one will lead you to the students' workbooks folder, each one of which has one PDF file for each grade (from kindergarten to 11th grade). The teachers’ guidebook has a comprehensive explanation of the SEL skills framework used in the program, as well as a step-by-step guide for each session.

Share the students' workbooks with them

If you have virtual classes, you could send your students the PDF file of their workbook and tell them to convert the PDF file to a Word file so that they can fill the activities. You could also teach them how to edit PDF files using a PDF reader.

Implement Navegar Seguro during Homeroom

In Alianza Educativa's schools, Homeroom is where we implement most of our Social-Emotional Learning and our Well-being programs. We have found that this allows teachers to prepare Navegar Seguro's sessions and to establish connections with other programs that also work on strengthening students' SEL skills, so that they can be understood as transversal to their education

Carry out a self-assessment session

In Alianza Educativa's schools, teachers send their students a survey in which they grade their own Social-Emotional Learning process by stating how much they agree with a sentence about a specific skill. For example:

"I know how to express my disagreement without starting a fight:

a. Not at all

b. Slightly true

c. Moderately true

d. Very true

e. Completely true"

We advise not to grade these responses nor to use them as a grading instrument, but to use them as a tool to foster a reflection process in students.

To understand how our framework works, we advise you to check the teacher's guidebook. There, you can find an explanation of the framework, as well as a description of the dimension, the general competence, and the specific competence that belong to each session.

Generalize SEL to other school settings

For example, you can talk to your students about the importance of analysis of consequences during Chemistry class, teach them how to use empathy and perspective-taking to understand a conflict in History class or encourage them to use assertiveness to deal with an unfair situation at school.

Creating learning opportunities to use their SEL skills during Navegar Seguro and other sessions will help students to put their skills into practice when they need to deal with difficult situations in their life outside of the classroom. In order to make this happen, students need to understand that Social-Emotional Learning is not just another class, but a tool that will help them have more satisfactory and healthy relationships, plan their life project and deal with the risks they may encounter in their lives.
