We hope to see young people exposed to a wide range of careers they didn't know existed and envision themselves and their interests and passions as part of a successful future. We provide them with an authentic way to practice the work of those careers while learning critical 21st century skills; communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity and problem solving.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

We know that experiential learning engages learners more deeply than traditional methods. We learn by doing, by creating, by playing a role, and by actively engaging in a project. The knowledge and skills acquired are applicable and transferable to greater opportunities. Through engaging and hands-on projects, we ignite passions and help jumpstart futures.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Our Xperiential platform and learning approach is accessible by anyone anywhere and provides deep insight into careers and authentic industry practice that is usually kept hidden behind the walls of organisations. Within a creative peer community participants are able to iterate on an industry accepted prototype receiving feedback along the way. Participants use our proprietary platform and curriculum, developed by a team of educators, hear from industry experts in livestream sessions and create a project that can be used in their portfolio. We have run the program for 21 months and have reached close to 10,000 participants in 51 countries with a completion rate of more than 85%.

How has it been spreading?

We built a platform ideally suited to experiential learning, iteration, collaboration and feedback that is able to serve a global community at scale. We have grown the program from serving youth (13 - 18) to both youth and adults (18+). We have grown from a pilot cohort with 350 participants to having registered almost 10,000 participants globally to date. We have now created an on demand version of the program allowing it to fit into any schedule. We plan to expand our Xperiential programs to include the following industries; Video Game, Entrepreneurship, Climate Action, Music, Journalism and more.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Anyone can participate in the program by registering at https://www.storyxperiential.com. It is being used in schools (middle, high school, college, community college), after-school programs, homeschooling, non-profit organisations, corporations and by individuals. If an organisation is interested in us building an Xperiential program for their industry sector reach out to contact@xiab.org.

Implementation steps

Register for the program
It is easy to register through our website https://www.storyxperiential.com. An educator can register a whole class and assign teams within the platform. Educators also have access to a dashboard that allows them to monitor their students work and support them along the way. Once you register you receive instructions to go through Orientation.
Go through Orientation
The orientation process is designed to familiarise participants and educators with the step by step approach of the program and all of the tools that will be needed to succeed. By completing orientation and submitting a simple "Hello World" project we feel confident that participants are set up for success.
What if?
This is the first step to developing your story idea. Participants create three different “what if” ideas for a story. They see past participants final projects and work towards creating their first submission by doing a series of exercises, participating in livestream sessions with industry experts, watching videos and getting and giving feedback on submissions.
Character
The job for this step is to create a character profile for a main character in the story. The character's name is: ______ On the outside, they look like: ______ On the inside, they are: ______ What they want most: ______ What stops them from getting what they want: ______ What they need to learn: ______.
The process is the same as the previous step.
World, Story Spine, Act 1, Act 2, Act 3 & Editing
Each of these steps has a submission deliverable, industry livestream sessions, exercises, videos and feedback. After the final step participants have the option of sharing the work to an exhibition gallery that is open to the public. They also receive a unique web page with their final submission that they can add to their portfolio and share with potential employers for internships etc.
