Grandparents Life Story Project

Use AI & smatrphones to combine photos of grandparents at different ages to tell life stories.

Life stories are the best teaching materials. This project uses AI,the shooting and synthesis functions of smartphones to allow grandparents to show the process and emotions of growing up from youth to old age. Create the values of interviewing, composing, writing, publishing, exhibition, and digital application for school children as well as reading life, respecting the value of old age.

Target group
I hope students can learn generative AI and digital applications, interviewing and editing skills, publishing and exhibition planning, promoting skills learning beyond academic subjects, thereby driving learning motivation, connecting with the latest technologies, and experiencing real-world interactive dialogue. Through the stories of grandparents, students can understand the attitudes and thoughts of different generations towards life, things that cannot be learned from textbooks. In addition, through this project, they can understand the process of personal growth, respect elders, enhance family bonds and identity through interactions with grandparents, realize that "human beings are transient," and cherish every moment of life.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

The reason for this project is that I have been engaged in education in rural areas of Taiwan for fifteen years and have seen that the biggest problem for school children here is intergenerational care, with grandparents taking over the care of children from parents who work away from home for extended periods. This generational gap leads to a lack of communication between school children and their grandparents, which in turn affects the children's motivation to learn and their sense of self-worth. In Taiwan, more than 100,000 school children face the same problem, thus requiring a solution that can initiate dialogue between the two generations. This project was born out of this context. We use AI, interviews, and visual creation in our teaching, allowing grandparents of school children, who are half a century apart in age, to use their own growth experiences as stories. Through interviews and creations by students, they can understand the meaning of the passage of time, bridge the gap between the two generations, build a harmonious society, stimulate learning motivation, and make family education and intergenerational relationships more harmonious.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

This project aims to facilitate intergenerational communication between school children and their grandparents by teaching students AI, interviewing, and publishing techniques. The goal is to achieve intergenerational co-creation, mend family relationships, and connect intergenerational dialogue through the completion of a life story book, thereby addressing the issue of school children in Taiwan who lose their motivation to learn due to a lack of family care. This innovative project allows school children to create their grandparents’ life stories through images, thereby bridging the gap between the two generations. In practical terms, school children must obtain photos of their grandparents when they were young 50 years ago, and take photos of their grandparents now through smartphones, and combine the two into the same image. The two images spanning half a century must be consistent with each other. interacted with. In addition to the creation of pictures, school children must learn the knowledge and abilities of digital applications through the processes of interviewing stories, writing stories, displaying results, publishing books, etc., and through this, they must understand that their grandparents were once young, and then realize the passage of life, meaning, and respect for the value of life.

How has it been spreading?

This project received the Social Education Contribution Award from Taiwan's Ministry of Education and two major educational innovation awards in Taiwan, enabling over 20,000 educators across Taiwan to reference and utilize it, providing a model for improving intergenerational relationships among students. We also held exhibitions in schools and communities, inviting grandparents and students to participate, and disseminated the information to the public through Taiwan's largest online news media, "United Daily News." Furthermore, we conducted interviews and filming throughout the process on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Line, sharing it with friends on online communities, garnering over 25,000 views. Finally, we also created an e-book of the "Stories of Fate," publishing it online for permanent distribution and providing it free of charge to other educators for reference.

How have you modified or added to your innovation?

With the advancements in AI over the past two years, I proposed using new AI language models such as Google Gemini, Grok, and ChatGPT for this solution. Compared to previous smartphone software, this significantly reduced the time students spent creating life stories and improved the aesthetics and realism of the visuals. Furthermore, we used an AI-powered app to create a function that allows students to generate life story articles simply by filling in information online. This has fully enabled students to learn how to apply AI in their studies and daily lives to solve problems.

If I want to try it, what should I do?

To begin this project, basic skills in photography, interviewing, e-book publishing, and AI tool usage are required. Ideally, existing social connections are essential for organizing promotional events. The project can be completed by simply replicating the following steps: 1. Teach children to explain the project's purpose to their grandparents and invite them to participate, thus learning communication and dialogue skills. 2. Find grandparents with photos of themselves from their youth and collect their pictures. 3. Visit them to learn about their life stories. 4. Select photos and take pictures of grandparents interacting with the photos. 5. Combine the two photos. 6. Layout the images. 7. Output the presentation content and create an e-book. 8. Invite grandparents to share their life stories and have children share their creative process, training their expression skills and motivating their learning.

Implementation steps

Find grandparents with young photos
Find photos of your grandparents when they were young, the younger the better, ideally capturing the best moments of their lives. Students must learn to explain this plan and persuade their grandparents to provide photos and cooperate with interviews. Teachers will assist students in using their mobile phones to photograph or scan photos and transfer them to the computer to prepare for creating a composite image.
Interview Storytelling and Editing: Generating Stories Using ChatGPT
Schedule an interview with grandparents to learn about their life stories and the photo stories they provide. Record the people, events, times, places, and objects, and input the information into ChatGPT to generate the life story content.Students will learn how to use prompts and the essential elements and methods of interviewing. The teacher provides the AI prompt "Please use the above information to generate a 500-word life story, which must include a title" and collects the students' work.
Select photos of grandparents when they were young and take their current photos
Through interviews about their life stories, select the most suitable photo as the main theme of the story, and schedule time to take recent photos of your grandparents. Teachers should guide students to arrange poses for their grandparents that echo those in their younger photos to facilitate later photo compositing. Students will learn how to communicate with their grandparents and arrange the composition, and learn techniques for taking photos with simple backgrounds.
Using artificial intelligence for photo compositing
Students used a smartphone app to remove the background from a photo and then used Gemini's image generation function to composite a photo of their grandparents in their youth with a recent photo, guided by the prompt "combine two photos so that the people in the two photos are embracing." Students learned how to use smartphone AI programs and prompts, while the teacher assisted in generating and collecting the results.
Layout
Students will edit the text and images in the prepared composite photograph using a Word document and create a PDF file to serve as the content for an ebook. During this process, students can learn visual composition, file conversion, and ebook creation skills. The instructor will provide visual samples for students to reference and collect their work.
Output Presentation and E-book Production
The completed document will be sent for printing, output as a large-format image, and framed. Suitable public display locations, such as community parks, will be found for hanging. The PDF file will be sent to the library to apply for an ISBN and uploaded to an e-book website for the public. Students will thus obtain a fully published work, recognize the value of their contribution to society, and increase opportunities for dialogue with their grandparents.
Grandparents Share Stories, Media Spreads the Word
Exhibitions and book launches are held, inviting grandparents and students as guests to share their life stories, which are then uploaded to social media and mainstream media to raise awareness of this model. This not only highlights the value of grandparents' lives but also fosters closer relationships between students and elders through interactive opportunities. Furthermore, students gain increased motivation through creating tangible results and learn professional skills.
