Touchable Earth

build great tools for teachers, let students see the world through the eyes of their peers

Touchable Earth is the first web-application that offers a solution to common pain points of primary school teachers, like saving time lesson planning, and having access to high-quality content while also providing a global perspective. We are the first web application with curriculum aligned content from around the world that showcases indigenous communities and takes a kids-teach-kids approach

We want kids to grow up learning similarities over differences and to see each other as peers no matter their identity and circumstances. We want to see blended classrooms where teachers have all the tools they need to create a learning environment where curiosity and learning about the world becomes a life-long learning journey for both students and educators together.

About the innovation

Why did you create this innovation?

One of the most commonly cited reasons for leaving the teaching profession is unpaid time working for teachers, the majority of which is spent on lesson planning. We want to solve this problem by offering global citizenship education resources to primary school teachers that they can implement across multiple subjects.

What does your innovation look like in practice?

Our innovation is a web-application that teachers can use before the classroom to lesson plan, during the classroom to engage students and at home to assign lessons and activities in order to hone cross-disciplinary skills and allow students of all learning styles to flourish!

Touchable Earth has 3 types of content:

- Kids-first videos from kids in over 25 communities from around the world talking about one thing regarding their culture (food, play, school, family etc.)

- Interactive activities (wordcould, games, interactive videos, drag the word, crosswords and more)

- Extra resources (we call it the treasure trove) - discussion points, printables, offline activity suggestions and a lot more

our team of learning designers works closely with teachers to curriculum align all of the above. Teachers can create their own lessons picking anything they like.

That way global citizenship becomes part of the curriculum instead of an "extra subject" that adds extra work!

How has it been spreading?

With very minimal email marketing efforts in the last 4 months we have a waitlist of over 50,000 students and educators that want to start using Touchable Earth

If I want to try it, what should I do?

Email Giota at giota@touchableearth.org

we have launched an MVP and are currently in alpha testing mode, slowly inviting users from our waitlist

Implementation steps

Step 1: Browse resources
Teachers log in to the web-application and can browse the content in an intuitive way. There are ready made lessons that align to their curriculum called journeys, and a treasure trove where they find all kind of extra resources.
Step 2: Make your own mission
Teachers can favorite any piece they like, and start creating "missions" which can be assigned to students. Our lessons are structured in a way that we showcase the global, regional and individual perspectives of each community and allows teachers to browse activities of all types .
Step 3: launch
With a simple click teachers can assign the missions they create to students. Or they can keep all their favorite resources handy for teaching in their class. Or they can grab the embed codes and integrate into the LMS systems they are already using!
